Video Card installation problem...

I have a Dell Dimension 4550 series.  I have upgraded the RAM to 1GB and the computer runs fine, but I also updated the AGP video card to a NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GS.  THis is what is happening now...

If I use the Add Hardware Manager, it states there was error installing the card.  That the parameters are incorrect.  If I use the CD that came with the video card, it installs just fine, but when I restart the computer, a blue screen comes up stating that an error has occurred and windows will shut down to protect the computer.  I cannot seem to get the card to work either way.  I have plugged in the power and everything is hooked up correctly.(I followed the diagram)

Did I buy too much of a video card for my PC?
Can I update my chipset/motherboard to fix the problem?
Should I adjust the BIOS on the PC?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

I used the Add/Remove programs application on the PC.

Did you completely remove the old drivers before shutting down to install the new one?

I have that video card on my system, no issues....

Proper install of a video card: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=965852

Download the most current driver, and have it placed on the desktop for later install. www.nvidia.com   driver site, if it’s a nVidia card, or www.ati.com driver site, if it’s a ati card.

Going from an ATI card to NVIDIA or vs. versa, one should uninstall the old driver first, from Add/Remove program, than use a driver cleaner, to get all the old driver code completely off the system. Use the driver cleaner twice.

http://www.drivercleaner.net/  Driver Cleaner Pro download site,

1. Turn off the system, unplug the power cord, and push in on the systems power button for about 5 seconds to discharge the system further.

2. Remove the old card, and install the new card, firmly. Attach if required, any power cable to the card, and to a power connector on your system. ( Some, not all, cards need a Molex Y power cable connected to the rear of the video card, and the other end to a power connector to get the video card to work )

3. Plug the power cable back in, and reboot the system. You may notice that the monitor screen is larger now. Not to worry if this happens.

4. Disable your anti virus software, and disconnect the modem.

5. Install the newer video card driver from the desktop, than if necessary; go into the Display Properties to reset the monitor resolution. You are almost done. Now restart the anti virus program and connect the modem. ( From time to time, the anti virus program may cause problems with the install of some drivers and some games, so its best to disable this to eliminate that possibility )

Thank you for all the awesome advice.  I followed your instructions but I still am having one problem.  I installed the new NVIDIA driver with the download from their website, but when I turned off the PC and restarted, it still did not recognize the new driver.  Windows stated there was new hardware detected and did I want to install it.  I no longer have the booting up problem, it is now that the video card installation does not seem to be recognized.  Any thoughts?  Thank you.

Ignore the new hardware detected advise and just go into display properties to change the resolution as you normally would.  See what happens.  Let us know

All it did was make everything smaller.  I ran the DirectX program DXDIAG through run programs and looked at the display tab.  It states there is no video driver currntly installed.  It is as if I never ran the installation program and I am running off of whatever is the generic set-up from the motherboard.

What do you mean smaller  ?  What monitor do you have ?  If its a LCD monitor and you have it set at the native resolution, lets say a 17 inch at 1280x1024 the fonts will be smaller than a 15 inch LCD.  A 20 incher will even have smaller fonts using the native resolution.

Other than that, and if no one else has a clue as to what is happening, you can try, and use the system restore program, and go back a few days prior to all that is happening to your computer to see if that works.  If not, back up all that you want to keep on a disk, than think about doing a Reformat and Reinstall of windows.  Some work, but it will get the system back to day one again.   Sorry, cannot think of anything else and good luck to you.

Hi Jklominder, I have a 8300 and am trying to install a 6800 video card. Did all the great suggestions that came from SR45 and other people and I have the exact same results as you, will not recognize the driver. I am also starting to think of a re-format and new install. Hope somebody comes up with a new idea!!!

The last thing I tried was going into the Device Manager and removing the video card.  When I restarted the PC, it recognized the new hardware (for the hundredth time), but to no avail, it still did not work.  I will be reinstalling Windows XP tonight.  I will let you know ho it goes by the end of the week.  Thank you everyone for the support.:smileyhappy:

Good luck!!

I have a new 410 watt power supply and the 6800 card setting on my desk, they will go in soon (I took the 6800 out and re-installed the 5200 so I could get back to gaming but it would not install either!). If that doesn't fix it then I will be following you with a format and install.

I plan on upping the power supply in my Dell Dimension 4550.  Any suggestions and is it difficult to do on my own?  Thank you.

This company seems to get a lot of recommendations from people on this group. They have direct replacements for Dell. Mine is a 410 watt vs the old one at 250 watts, and cost about $100. By the way before I bought it I put a scope on the 12 volt buss (with the 6800 card installed) and it was measuring only 11.8 volts and had ripple on it. So even if this does not fix the problem I apprently have added too many things to my 8300 over the last two years. Good luck.
