VISTA vs. XP

Hi Everyone!

I keep jumping back between the 2 Operating Systems, in a attempt to decide which OS I really prefer!

I am now running VISTA.

It is fine, but I miss a feature that XP had.

My modem has no speaker, but in XP, the sound of my modem pulling up dial tone and dialing my ISP until connected, was a feature I miss in Vista.

Anyone know how I can duplicate this feature in Vista?

Thanks for help.

Play an mp3 of it everytime you dial up. Why would you even want to hear that anyway?

People still use dial-up? Amazing.

Did you look at the modem properties?  There is a sound slider on the Modem tab.

Control Panel |  Phone and Modem Options | Modems | Properties for your Modem | Modem tab page

The sound would be a selectable wave what you would hear in the Windows "sounds" menu, anytime the modem was activated.  This is a feature available in XP by default, and is not promoted.

The tone quality is smooth, unlike that of a typical modem speaker.

I do not find the amplified sound of dial tone and dialing pulses to be annoying at all......After connection is made, sound is muted......I think it is great.

Lets me know if pc is auto-dialing when unattended or searching for auto-updates.....

Simply a nice feature not offered in VISTA.

I am sure that a simple registry entry can solve this simply, but I am not anywhere near that proficient in playing with the registry....

I am also sure someone out there can do it!!    CHALLENGE!

I find the amplified sound of dial tone and dial pulses not to bother me at all.

In fact, I like this notification sound, similar to what you would find in "Sounds" menu in the control panel.

After modem connects, sound is muted........perfect for me!.......I do miss the "feature" that is offered in XP by default.

Vista is a good Operating System, regarding speed, features, etc.   However, to some laptop users, the new OS is bloated with code, and requires more HD space........not significant, but something to consider for users with older systems and smaller drives....

No biggie......just a nice "feature" that I enjoyed............sound lets me know when unattended pc is dialing out automatically, searching for updates and such.......NOT important, but nice for me.

while I understand why you would want the sounds for dialup (I agree if that's what I was doing), it might be difficult for many to find an answer because well we didn't even get modems in our systems....
