Volt Mod on a CPU Dimension 9100

I was just on a forum that shows volt modifications for intel Pentium D Cpu's. My quetion is this, by simply modding the voltage to my CPU will that overclock it on a Dell Dimension 9100. There's a guy on ebay saying he modded a Pentium 630 to 4.0ghz on a Dimension 9100. He said he only modified the CPU, nothing else. Now he's selling this PC. I was wondering if I could do that, knowing full and well it would kill my already dead warrenty. To me it seems that this mod would only up the voltage and tempature and not the clock speed, since it's already set by Dell Bios. However, if the Bios clocks the chip by voltage, we could be in luck huh? Anyone know, please respond. I'm not saying this is something I'm going to do, it's way to risky, but I would like to know if that is what he did to get that result.

I don't pretend to be an expert, but I don't see how just increasing the voltage would do anything other than increase the power dissipation. You would need to increase the clock rate of something to get it to go faster. The PDs burn enough power without any help ;).

Raising voltage does several things, none of which you'd want.  Raises heat.  Raises noise floor, but cancels that by creating more noise.  Lowers reliability, by exceeding device ratings.  It even costs more to run.
 
If it were practical to make Pentiums run at 4GHz by just raising the voltage, Intel would have done it since they price by speed.
 
Fun experiment, on a box you were going to throw away anyhow.  I sure wouldn't do it to my primary system (well, I wouldn't do it at all).  More productive in terms of performance, would be researching which Windows services can be disabled, freeing system resources.

i am pretty sure volt mod is only way to overclock a dell machine. i know some people have oc'ed PD 805 to 4 GHz from 2.66 using pin mod. you have to do two sections. section 1 is to pump up FSB, from 133 to 200 or from 200 to 266, depending on what dell machine have. in this section you need to bridg/insulate BSEL 0 and 1. you will in crease core voltage second part. you have to mod pin VID (i forgot pin number)...keep in mind, you may need to change psu and heat sink if you want 4g

Volt mods are just used to enable overclockers to increase/decrease the FSB/CPU multiplier reliably. Increasing the cpu speed would need more power,thus the volt mod.This is usually done for mobos that has no settings for voltages.

Thanks for your imput everyone. I think I agree that Intel would have done this if it is practical. However intel may have wanted to keep power consumption and heat at a certain level too, so you can't just say it wouldn't increase performance. My computer runs just fine like it is now. I have a Volt mod on my Graphics card and that really seems to give me enough power. I was just wondering how this guy got those clock speeds on a Dell computer. I don't pretend to know enough to try this though, I paid too much for this PC as it is when I ordered it from Dell.

Very articulate.  Exactly what happens.  A design is a series of compromises.  With a soldering iron, the enduser can alter those compromises.
 
Intel and Dell rate their products conservatively.  I don't have firsthand knowledge of the Intel test procedure, but it's rumored to be "how fast will it go before it messes up?" then subtract a couple hundred MHz.  Performance can indeed be gained, especially at the cost of reliability and integrity.  (Extreme example, how long can you drive your car as fast as it will go?)
 
So again, it's a hobby project, not necessarily a practical performance solution.

they're assuming normal cooling conditions as well. if you mod a great liquid cooling solution on there, i have a feeling the extra temperature would not be a problem.

for dell with cpu PD 805, it should go from 2.66ghz to 4.0 ghz, if you go to pin mod. the method, like i said before, is to mod BSEL pins (increase fsb) and VId pins (increase Vcore). If you have knowledge of oc, you know what i am talking about. Since dell locks mobo bios, you can't oc cpu using other ways. my dimension booted at 4.0ghz but failed to load OS because the psu and vcore( i had a vid combination of 1.435v, which was still too low i believe). For those guys who want to do these work, you must be comfortable to do sodering.
