will not power on

I have received an dimension 4550 that will not power on.  The owner was informed that the motherboard was bad, when the power supply is connected the on board led light shows green, but I replaced the board anyways, still no power.  I see that the motherboard connects to another circuit board for the front USB and audio connectors, that board then connects to the board where the power is established by pressing the font button.  could one of those boards be bad?  Im running out of ideas here...

Probably the reason the fornt panel button and the button cable causes yr pc not working properly.

Could be, I totally thought about that.  But I am unable to get underneath the button.  I wanted to check the connectivity, but I cant get in there.  Are you suggesting the problem is with the connectivity, the circuit board it connects to, or the cable?  And if so how to I get there?

the cable between MB and the button beneath the button panel.

check the side ended at mb to see the connector is mounted on mb firmly .

Check whether it loosens the connector and white cable?

or unplug the cable and power on with flat driver on the pin 9 and 10 .

not sure pins but sure u need 2pins to get power on with flat driver.

What is the reading of the power button LED, green, blinking green, solid amber, blinking amber?
What is the sequence of the diagnostic LEDs at the back of the case?

Which light are you referring to.  There is a green led light on the mother board that is steady green as long as the power cable is connected.  Other than that there are no other indicator lights at all.  Its just the strangest thing, but I concluded that from that green light that the motherboard should be ok, I replaced it and still saw the green light, but it would not power on.

The power button has a small diagnostic LED and on the back panel of the case there are four diagnostic LEDs.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I get no action on the led diagnostic lights, but per the other post you directed me to they also got the led lights on the network card, and possibility the motherboard.  Im going to test the power supply, but I don't feel comfortable jumping wires, how do you put them back, I have other power supplies that could be used for test or a ATX power supply tester.  If you have more info on jumping the green to black wire to test power supply, I would love to learn how, I just wasn't sure exactly by the given instructions.

I'm having the same problem with my 4550. I bought a new power supply and install it, still nothing but the steady green light on the MB, i think its call the 'stand by power light'. Anyway does anyone have any other ideas what could be wrong? The fan doesn't even start on the power supply when its plugged in. Thanks

 

I jumper the 'green and black pins' on the 20 pin power cable and the processor fan startup! Powr supply is OK. FYI

Im still working on the issue, I had to stop to fix other comps.ext.  If you get any more infor on our issue please let us know.  I recently found out the user of the pc had tried a new power supply before he sent it to me.  Keep me posted and I'll do the same.

I have been told that maybe a 'bad' memory stick and or video card could also be the problem! Is this correct?

not that I am aware of.  What all have you tired.  Im currently looking into the other system boards, there in one that connects the front power on board to the system board or MB  maybe thats it.  Let me know what you have tried.  This is one of the strangest things I have seen.

I just got done testing the pushbutton switch board. Mine tested OK. It was a b.... to get out! You have to unsnap the gray cover from one side with a small screwdriver. Then unsnap the ring around the pushbutton, Then you can insert the small screwdriver into a small opening to get the screw out, to remove the switch board. Anyway the board and cable to the other audio/control panel board at the bottom tested fine with my meter. I had a IT guy tell me to change out the memory stick with a new one and or the video card to. I also jumped the green and black wire on my power supply 20 pin plug and the processor fan motor started up, so I know my new power supply is delivering power to the board. FYI

Yeah, I got the power button open to.  I found that the button was not hitting the sensor correctly, but I pushed it manually, still nothing.  So, IM curious as to what you mean by tested the pushbutton switchboard.  Because I think the problem is either there or the board in between the pushbutton and the mb.  How do you test the powersupply, Im unsure as to what others have told me about the wires.. I don't fully understand.  Do you agree after your testing and findings that the problem must lie within the pushbutton board or the connector board, not the mb.  Also, none of my "diagnostic" led lights come on .  That's a sign of power supply, but the owner of the PC states he switched it before he sent it to me.

I tested the continuity with both boards removed by attaching the ribbon cable to both boards without fully setting the cable plug into the pins, then I use my meter probes to insert one probe under the plug enough to check each pin, from the switch board to the audio board, I had continuity from one end to the other, so I know that I have a 'good' connection through the cable to the audio board then to the switch board.

To test the power supply, look at the 20 pin plug. You'll see a green wire and next to that is a black wire. Take a paper clip and make a U shape for a jumper. Insert one end into the BLACK pin opening then the other end into the GREEN opening. Plug the power cord into the power supply and the processor fan should startup right away. I'm still looking at replacing my memory stick to see what happens. I'm also trying to find out about the micro processor to see if this has anything to do with it not starting. Hope this help you! PS, I to did not have any diagnostic lights lit 'at all' on my original board either!
