Windows 98 Startup Menu

I am not an expert at this either, but try either using My Computer or Windows Explorer to get to C:\Windows\Start Menu. In the \Start Menu Folder, you should see the list of things on your start menu, including a folder for "Programs". If you open up the Programs folder, you should see a list of all the shortcuts that show up when you move the mouse over Programs in the Start Menu.

Now, try to find the "Startup" folder. If you put it back in the Start Menu under "Programs", it should be in the C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder. Once you find it, double-click to open it up. Is it empty? If it is empty, it contains no shortcuts and that is why it doesn't contain sub-menus when you move your mouse over it in the Start Menu. You'll need to put new shortcuts into the Startup folder before you'll see them on the Start Menu.

If you are in the c:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder and there are links in the folder, I don't know why they are not showing up in the Start Menu and you'll have to hope someone with more expertise can answer your question.

Hope I was at least a little helpful. Oh yeah, next time you want to place a shortcut onto your desktop from the Start Menu, it might be safer to navigate to the shortcut under the C:\Windows\Start Menu folder and make a copy of it, or right-click on the shortcut on the Start Menu and select copy, then paste it do the desktop.

If you want to create a shortcut in the future, you may do so by right clicking on the item, and select Send to, and then Desktop (create shortcut)

Thanks. I actually fixed it shortly after I posted the help message. Don't ask me how but I messed with it for a while and got it back to its original form. I was doing what you were suggesting and the original startup items were in the folder but for some reason they weren't showing up in the submenu when I put the mouse pointer on the folder. Anyway, in the future, I'll make sure to change the way I put items on the desktop.
