Windows "Event" Sound Problem

Suddenly, my Window's Event Sounds have stopped coming out of my audio/speakers, e.g: when I plug in my card reader I used to get a "Bing Bong" when it was plugged into my USB port &  a "Bong Bing" when it was removed but it's not the only event sound that's stopped, all of them have.

But the event sounds are working as I been into the Sounds function and there are all the Window events sounds with a "speaker" symbol next to them and I've clicked on the tab to test them and each sound then comes out of my speakers!

Also, my other sound functions work normally, i.e. When I play my CDs, DVDs & MP3 player through the system but the event sounds don't.

Any ideas?

Hi Alexandra,

I've just signed it to report that I fixed the problem but still not sure how.

Besides the Event sound failure I've also had another problem that happened around the same time which affected video screen viewing but that problem occured whilst watching the BBC's iPlayer service here in the UK.

The BBC suggested that I re-installed the drivers for my NVIDIA Graphics card to cure the video viewing problem and I did and the video problem was cured.

However, it also returned my Windows Events sounds too!!!....Go figure! LOL.

So, all seems well now.

All the best.

What operating system - XP, Vista, 7?

Easiest thing to try first is a system restore to a date before the sounds disappeared - Start - Programs - Accessories, System Tools, System Restore.     Odds are something changed (an update, new program, etc.) - if you don't remember what, hopefully system restore will undo it.

I recall an old thread with a similar problem on XP - turned out the problem was only with a particular user account, and it was a Weather Channel add-on that did it (though that particular bug was fixed years ago).     Safest fix for that situation is just to create and use a different  account.     Alternatively,  the following thread has a registry fix for XP, but strictly an "at  your own risk" deal - and I do not know if the same applies to Vista or 7.

Glad it's sorted, and thanks for posting how it was fixed.

Always nice to have another tip to add to the "go figure" archive.  :emotion-1:
