Windows lock-up (Win XP)

I have a Dell desktop running windows xp. My system locks up randomly during every session. Most of the time I am in the middle of doing something on line with my browser or reading email. Sometimes the system reboots and sometimes, just before it locks, the screen get's garbled and rolls? This has been going on for awhile now and I have had little success with Dell support. Can anyone advise?

If the whole computer locksup you may have a hardware problem. Try running the Dell diagnostics to check your hardware. You also need to see if Dell has a diagnostic for your video card. You may find these on your Dell Resource CD. The Diagnostics can be downloaded from Dell Downloads.

I ran the Dell diag and all it found was a problem with the RTC 32 Hz crystal may not be working. I sent this to Dell and left several voice messages but they don't return calls. I'll check for the video diagnostics.
Thanks

I have a dimensions 4300, with XP. I am very unhappy. I too have had many problems. I dont know where to turn either. I get dropped from my isp every so often, I continually am receiving error reports that I send to microsoft and at times it is very difficult to shut down the computer. When I try, it tells me to "close all apps and try again." then my system tries to reopen outlook. It shows on the task bar, but I am unable to open it and close it. I repeat this a few time trying to get it to shut down without success. I then have to do a hard shut down. This is no easy task either. I usually have to hold the power button down for about 5 seconds before the system will shut down. I HATE XP!!!!

I went in and deleted every thing I didn't need or use, now the lockups have slowed. What bothers me is that Dell Tech support is no help. They take your money for the phone support service but provide it. I have to do those hard boots evey time, it's crazy. They think this is over when my warranty expires, think again. I've been sending all my personal inofrmation in my complaints by email with no response. Hope you get your worked out......
