Windows XP Pro Upgrade (FULL VERSION)

Hello,

I recently got Windows XP PrO (Full Version) and I'm wanting to install it this weekend on my computer. Currently I have a Dell Dimension 8100 running Windows ME. I meet all the software requirements for the XP program too...

I just have a few questions.

1) When I install the Windows XP Pro, will it format my computer since it's Pro version?
2) In which case, I will have all Dell Programs that came with my Dell computer on the CD's they gave me (i.e. Printers, applications, and resource CD with Drivers and Utilites).
3) If I do have to reinstall Dell Programs and I put in the Applications CD that has the programs dell came with, it will not have any problems re-installing them since I'm on a new OS.

Thanks! I appreciate it.

The Install will give you an opportunity to format or not. If you
choose not to format, chances are that you're going to run
into problems down the line. By far the preferred method is
to convert the drive to NTFS and do a format, then install XP,
followed by your applications. You may have to download one
or two drivers depending on printer/scanner/camera or whatever.

There are excellent instructions on installing XP available, start
HERE.

Good luck, and happy XP'n

It should not format your hard drive. I will just tell you honestly that I'm not quite sure. From what I know it will not affect anything. In a case it does have all your Dell disks and whatever else ready to go in case of need.

Hello! About a month ago, I installed Wins XP Pro - full version on my Dell Dimension 4100, previously had wins ME.
I printed out the inst. and famaliarized myself with them, that jab-pns referred to in prior post and followed them. The inst. here are almost word for word of what happens.
I did a full format and clean install and changed to NTFS file system.
Took about 2 hrs. When done, everything worked fine. I haven``t as yet installed all the programs that came with my Dell. The ones I have re-installed work fine.

Hello! Forgot to mention in my last note. Before doing format and installing XP, I made backup of my Favourites, My Documents, address book, etc. to CD-R. Then after installing XP was able to copy them into the new setup.

Hello! From what I understood from Symantec website NAV 2001 will not work with XP, so I got 2002 and works fine. Actually I use Norton SystemWorks Prof., which includes NAV, plus I use Norton Firewall 2002, which integrates with NSW window.
Everywhere I had read, prior to installing XP, everyone that seems to have problems are ones that did an upgrade of XP, instead of doing a full clean install.
Other people told me not to do an upgrade, but to install full version, after reformatting. Whether this is reason I haven`t had any problems, after installing XP, who knows.
But I made decision to do this instead of taking a chance of having all kinds of problems.

Hello all,

Thanks for the support and I'm taking everything into consideration. I'm most likely going to do the upgrade, instead of the full install because I have files on the computer that I really don't wish to lose.

I've discovered a few things on my own, such as Norton AntiVirus 2001 will no longer work. This is a disappointment, but I think I will continue to install Windows XP Pro.

That is about my only concern though. That and, that I might run into errors like pointed out in a previous post that I will run into errors maybe, if I don't format my computer. So my question is, what are the chances of having those problems in the long run, and how serious are they?

I agree completely with bluerose124 and jab-pns, re: format and clean install of XP Pro. Most problems with XP seem to arise from the upgrades. You can backup your data simply enough and reinstall needed programs on a rock solid operating system when you are done.
It’s really quite painless if you prepare for it and follow the very good instructions available (see link from jab-pns).
