Windows XP standby failure

On a Dell 8200 with Windows XP and error message is returned when I try to go into standby. It claims the device driver for the "Communication Port (COM!)" is preventing the machine from entering standby. There is nothing connected to the COM! port and installing the latest driver does not correct the problem. After reponding to the error message the mouse fails and the system has to be rebooted to restore the mouse.

This is a common report from many. It has been recommended you use the Always On mode , not standby or hibernate on the 8200 desktops. Go to Control Panel, Power Options, select Always On Scheme, and select Hard Disks and System Standby as Never, you can select your monitor to shutoff though without any problem usually. Problem is, some of the components in the 8200 can't wake up.

Problem was caused by Quicken background download manager. Fix available from Quicken and summarized below:
1. Open Quicken.
a. From the Windows XP default Start menu, point to All Programs,
Quicken, and then click Quicken 2000.
b. From the classic Start menu, point to Programs, Quicken,
and then click Quicken 2000.
2. In the Quicken window, on the Edit menu, point to Options,
and then click Internet Options.
3. In the Customize Quicken 2000 Download dialog box, click the
Connection tab, and then click Don?t use background
downloading.
Note: Do not click OK.
4. In the Customize Quicken 2000 Download dialog box, press ALT+SHIFT+4.
5. In the Quicken 2000 for Windows dialog box, click Yes.
6. In the Customize Quicken 2000 Download dialog box, click OK.
7. In the Quicken window, on the File menu, click Exit.
8. Restart the computer.

If you are having the same problem and have Quicken installed try this fix. Good luck!
