Hello Joe, I would suggest you edit and remove the service tag number as it is a violation of the Terms of Service for the Dell Community Forum.

You might take a look in the Control Panel, Device Manager, and determine the manufactirer of this device and go to thier web site and see if you can locate the needed driver.

Just some thoughts.

I have been doing some searching and found there seems to be issues with this chipset.

They have stopped marketing it and it has been replaced with an 8000 series chipset.

One piece of information suggested that you download the drivers for your ATI video card, and the drivers for the chipset would be included and installed.

I cannot verify this however. It might not hurt to try this approach.

If they are not in the ATI drivers, or not the correct version, then they want install.

Just some thoughts.

You SM Buss controller is part of the Chipset. You will need to find the mfr and version of the the Chipset and then install that. probably will have to install it in SafeMode

Since there are no XP drivers listed for your system under your model on the Drivers and download page you will need to do this for all your drivers.

According to your system specs that you can find HERE you have a   AMD RS780 and SB700

Now normally when one installs XP there is an order necessary in reloading drivers. that order can be found HERE

Note that not all system will have every driver or device listed this is just a standard order.

Device Manager doesn't know what it is. Just says "Other Device" then "SM Bus Controller" with a big ole yellow question mark with an "!" in it. Thanks for the tip on the service tag.

ATI video card drivers installed with no problem. I have been living with SM Bus controller error in my device manager for about a month with no problem. Now just in the past few days I having a problem with freeze up. I reboot and all comes back fine, but I'm thinking it is associated with the SM Bus controller error.

Hello joe884, You could go to the Dell web site and enter your service tag number in the search box and see if you can locate the drivers for your system. If you system was shipped with Vista, there would be no XP drivers listed. The manufacturer of the chipset for your system is AMD since it is labled AMD 780 in the specifications.

The only issue here though, is that many of the manufacturer's chipset drivers do not work with OEM motherboards.

I searched for the AMD 780 chipset drivers and could not locate any.

Some of the OEMs write their own drivers (code) to meet their specific instructions, in order to either limit or enhance their systems.

The chipset, as the manufacturer refers to it, is the solid-state device that is mounted on the motherboard very near the processor.

It controls many of the operations of the system. It acts much like a traffic cop and directs data here and there as needed.

It has several functions to take care of, one being the USB buss (system) that enables the USB ports and devices to operate.

It also manages much of the memory operations as well as other duties.

Many refer to this chipset as the Northbridge and there is also another chipset that is referred as the Southbridge.

It plays a lesser role than the Northbridge, but still an essential role.

This does get a little technical, but it is really not necessary to know what all the functions of the chipset are, but just to have the proper drivers for the chipset to operate as it should.

Joe, The SM Bus controller drivers are included in the download package for the AMD local video drivers. These are typically overlooked if you ordered your desktop with the upgraded ATI graphics.

1. Go ahead and download the video driver for Windows XP for the AMD video chipset.
2. When you run it, you will be given a list of things it is installing. 
3. Make sure the chipset support is checked. You do not have to install the actual video driver if you plan to use the ATI upgrade card.

On my Inspiron 546MT, the details are:

Windows XP compatible
AMD RS780 Video Drivers

This resolved the yellow exclaimation point for the SM Bus driver for Windows XP on my Inspiron 546 mini-tower (546MT).

I cant find my model number throw dell Auto product tag cos the software need   version 4 but in desk of PC writhed model number : DCCY

in my device manager both Multimedia Audio Controller and SM Bus Controller are yellow

I suggest starting a new thread that you can mark as answered if we find a solution.

Typically the SM Bus Controller error means the chipset drivers aren't installed. Which model do you have?

Windows XP has < 1 year of support left see Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 - End of Life April 2014 for more information. 

You are best to go back to Windows 7 opposed to installing Windows XP..

SM Bus Controller means you have NOT installed the Chipset drivers.
