XPS T450 video problem

Question

System has been running O.K. for a long time. A couple of days ago it developed a video problem. On boot up after putting the wallpaper on the desktop before putting all the icons on the desktop it will go black and lockup. Sometimes get a blue screen with "an Exception 0E has occurred at 0028: various numbers" or just a spontaneous reboot. Will start O.K. in Safe mode or Diagnostic mode. Was suggested to remove display adapter and monitor from device manager and have system reinstall those. It didn't solve anything. McAfee AV is up to date and running. Ran Stinger, Ad Aware and SpyBot but none of them found much and didn't solve problem.

Any suggestions?

Hi

Did you remove the drivers for the Video card, from the the control panel, add remove programs icon first. What OS, (Operating System) are you running ??

Vince, Didn't remove from add/remove programs just device manager, but will try that. We are running WIN98SE which came with the system. Ron

Ron, by chance is the error ----> 0028:C00051EF in VXD VMM(01) + 0000441EF   ?    If it is then I suspect it started after you did your latest McAfee AV virus signature update.  I have the same problem crop up this week using Windows 98SE and McAfees.  From what I found out the latest .dat files are larger than the previous versions.  Thus when McAfees tries loading into memory at boot up there is a memory conflict with the video.  For now I have temporarily reverted back to an older set of .dat files until I have more time to sort out the problem.

You are correct in it being related to McAfee. Doing trial and error with msconfig I solved the problem by unchecking the Mcshld9x.exe file in the start up listing. After that the system worked O.K. They are running McAfee AV version 10 and had done the weekly update (5-1-06 version) shortly before the problem. Went on McAfee forums and there were other messages about this week's update and problems with WIN98. Not sure if there is a sure solution for all yet.

Ron, I've listed below some of the suggestions I came across so far while searching the Internet.....   I found several suggestions to update the video drivers.  Since I'm using the latest NVidia drivers already, I don't see that as a solution, but I thought I would pass it along to you.   Couple of others suggested reducing the number of McAfee's features that load at startup such as the download scan and / or webscan.  I don't see this as an option since it reduces the effectiveness of having a AV program.   Still some suggested re-installing McAfee's, but I doubt this will work as well.  On my third hard drive I've have a fresh install of Win98 and the problem affected that OS as well with the latest .dat files.   The most logical solution offered was to dump McAfee's in favor of one of the freeware antivirus programs out there such as AVG.  I'm still using the original McAfee's version 4.x that came with my XPS T so I've gotten my use out of it over the last 7 years although I hate to switch.  For now I'm going to continue using the older .dat files and check back with McAfee's periodically over the next couple of weeks to see if they resolve the problem.  Since it sounds like a few people are complaining maybe they will.  Quite of few of the suggestions I came across on the Internet were from back in 2002 so it would appear the problem has cropped up before and was resolved.  So maybe McAfee's will take interest again in resolving it in 2006.

Ron, give Mcafee's another try.  I just downloaded and installed their 05/09/06 .dat files and so far my system is working Ok.  I've done a couple of warm boots and a cold boot without a problem.  I would assume they've fixed the problem.
