XPS720 H2C RAM Question

I'm running Vista x64 with no probs and do use VMWare quite a lot.
Seriously tempted to go up to the max 8Gb ram.

Do you think this stuff will work ok in this system?

That's really handy to know, thanks.

More nervous about 8Gb in one of these systems I have to admit.

  Sorry,
That I can't help you with, although I'm very interested myself.

Which is preferred in a XPS 720 -- 1066FSB RAM with 5-5-5-18 timings, or 800FSB RAM with 4-4-4-12 timings?

It seems like a tradeoff, performancewise, similar to the old ddr2-533 vs. ddr2-667 debate.  Faster timings offset the slower fsb.

I have the Corsair Dominators that came with my Dell XPS 720 that run at 1066, and another XPS with Crucial Tracers that run at 800 with 4-4-4-12 timings.  Can't really tell a difference between the PC's.

I have 4 gigs of this in my sons gaming 720 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227231

And I think it runs as good, if not better than my 1066 memory.

I'm in the middle of a search for 8GB memory for the XPS 720 too...

I currently have 4GB of the ReaperX (EB800) in my system and I can tell you that without modding the memory in some way, you won't be getting 4 ReaperX modules into a 720 without possibly stressing a connector or damaging something.

The heat sinks on the ReaperX is HUGE!!!  Four can't be installed together.

I'm currently looking at these candidates for replacement...

or,

(I like the timings on the Patriot, but I'm not sure they'll hold there with 8GB installed.  I've been told the more DIMMS you have, the more stress is placed on the memory controller and you might have to relax the timings).

If I have to go CAS5 for 8GB, I'd look at these I guess.

The OCZ support is just phenomenal.  Those guys have a great forum and really take the time to work with their customers.  I'm also leaning towards the OCZ because of the EPP support they have.  I don't want to tweak voltages, timings, etc.

I've taken the plunge and put 8gb of http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227231 into my system

No problems with boot etc but Vista x64 being a bit of a pain. Regular blue screens with ntfs.sys and memory_management errors. This is a tad annoying but I'm working through it (memory has been tested as ok)
Personally i think it's the Creative Xi-Fi card (really messy drivers) or the 8800's (even worse drivers).
Tempted with a 3870 Radeon X-Fire setup, i dont hear as many horror stories with their drivers.

You ran Memtest86 1.70 on all 8GB at the same time for 4-5 hours (probably closer to 10 hours for 8GB) and received no errors?  Let it get up to 5-6 passes at least.  When I had memory problems the failures started cropping up around pass 4 or 6.

Also, what does CPU-Z show in regards to the Memory and SPD tabs?  I'd like to see those if you don't mind as I'm considering this setup.

Sure i'll post some images up showing it. Nothing spectacular tho, showing the timings advertised.

I've a friend who bought these and has had great luck with them...

I tried 8GB of these last night from the local Fry's and after 13000+ errors in Memtest 86 decided I don't like Patriot memory.

Still considering whether or not to order the OCZ memory.

I may stick with 4GB for now and save the extra money for a shiny new XPS730 (or whatever the next generation supa-cool system will be).

You're running ReaperX ram, why are you giving out the budget SLI RAM link?  Im looking for the best RAM on the planet for my 720h2c! :)

Because I can't get 8GB of the ReaperX in there.  I wish I could but the heat sink is just too large without making some sort of modification.

I've also been told that running 4 DIMMS puts additional stress on the memory controller and that running memory with slightly looser timings (5-4-4-15 on those OCZ DIMMS for instance) makes getting to 8GB that much more possible.  The difference in performance isn't that much actually (0.1 of a point in the Windows Performance Index).

SOOOO, I'm considering the slightly slower timings for the benefit of 8GB.

I'll second that.  How'd you get those DIMMS in there?  One might be able to force them, but I'd be really uncomfotable that they wouldn't be seated properly if one did so...

Wait... thought 4 ReaperX modules would not fit because of the heatsinks?  What are you using to achieve 8GB?
