Yahoo Messenger and Microphone Problems

I am using a DELL Dimension 8300.  When I log into Yahoo Messenger, the people on the other end cannot hear my voice through the mic.  They say they hear some clicking....thats about it.
 
I have gone into Control Panel and tested the mic, and all seems fine.  It will record a WAV file with no problem.
 
Any suggestions?

Generally, it's a Codec problem, from what I've read on this forum. Here is some instructions on adding Codecs that I recently got from Win XP newsletter.  As the instructions state they can't say which Codec you may need.  You may have to try one or start loading them until you get the one that works.

    QUESTION:

    I don't seem to have voice for chat anymore and my marvelous machine tells me I need to reinstall codecs. This would be wonderful if I had any idea as to how to achieve this. I have found instructions on how to go about this on a WIN '98 machine but I have XP Home. Is there any help that you could pass along? - Michael D.

    ANSWER:

    Codecs (compression/decompression software) are necessary for many audio applications. Here's how to install codecs in Windows XP:

    Click Start | Control Panel and double click Add hardware, then click Next.

    Click Yes, I have already connected the hardware and click Next.

    Choose Add a new hardware device and click Next.

    Select Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced), and click Next.

    Select Sound, video and game controllers from "Common hardware types" list and click Next.

    Select (Standard system devices) from "Manufacturer" and then click Have Disk.

    Click Browse in the "Install From Disk" dialog box and open the folder C:\Windows\System32.

    Find mmdriver.inf file, select it and click Open, then click OK in the "Install From Disk" dialog box. If you see a warning about logo compatibility, click Continue Anyway.

    You can now select from the list of audio codecs. You must install them one at a time. If you know the codec you need, select it and click OK. This should re-install the codec (You may need your Windows XP installation CD). Which codec you need depends on the chat program you're using.

    Restart the computer.

    ok fixed mine   try putting in your dell deminsion resource cd let it analyze your system to the left of the screen it will list your model change to 8400 then look over on right hand side top one is audio driver adi 198x integrated rev a20 double click on it scroll to bottom and extract files it will say it may not work properly but continue as it will work follow install wizard download procedures it will then ask to restart your computer then try it.  Think certain driver versions were bad this one 5.12.1.5211 driver date 8/13/04 works great for me. I tried this because my friend has the same sound card but was running this version on his 8400 and it solved all my problems. Let me know if it worked for you if not you can use your cd and reinstall your original driver and then try getting help else where. hope it does work for you.
