3D Mark score...
I need a bit of help with this one...
Just downloaded and ran 3DMark03 on my Dell Inspiron 5100 and got a score of 184, which seems pretty low. My system spec is below:
Pentium 4 2.8ghz
512mb RAM
Mobility Radeon 7500
Windows XP Pro
DirectX version 9.0b
The laptop has been prone to overheating recently and I am worried that this may have adversley affected the graphics card or CPU...
Any thoughts on this would be a massive help! CHEERS!

Actually, s/he has a DirectX 7 card, making it even worse. ATi generally names the card based on what version of DirectX they support in hardware.
7xxx --> DirectX 7
8xxx --> DirectX 8
9xxx --> DirectX 9 (Except 9000 & 9200)

True the 7500 was supposedly equal to the geforce 2 gts and it is a direct x 7 card. so my bad. still 3dmark 2k1 will be a better judge.

I installed and ran 3Dmark2001 and got a score of about 2800... which is still think is a bit low
As soon as I get some more thermal compund i'm going to open up the machine and clean out the heatsink

I also have notebook cooler coming in the next couple of weeks so there should be heat wont be too much of a problem when that arrives.

Just came across this testing: http://www6.tomshardware.com/mobile/20020220/radeon7500-06.html
The Dell Laptop with a Mobility 7500 64Mb Version scored a 3731. You will notice the GeForce also tested score barely above 2000. The GeForce however only had 32MB of video memory. IF you have only 32MB, expect a score in between 37xx and 20xx. If you have the 64MB version, you are definitely testing MUCH lower than you should.

2800 does seem a bit low. Here is a link testing an ATi 8500 & 7500 as well as several other cards. http://www.sharkyextreme.com/hardware/videocards/article.php/3211_932821__8
Assuming you are running at the default settings, I would've expected at least nearly a score of 4,000. However, there are so many things which can affect a 3dMark score, there is no telling what the roblem could be.
- Heat could be an issue, IF your GPU has the ability to throttle itself. Thus, if it is getting hot, it underclocks itself and thus poor performance.
- AGP Aperture can affect a 3dMark score. However, on most Dell systems (or other big name type systems) it isn't adjustable.
- Video Memory can also play a big part. I think the 5100 had dedicated video memory, but the options were either 32MB or 64MB. The retail desktop version of the 7500 had 64MB. If you only have 32MB of video ram, this will affect the score quite a bit as well. (Dell's website is a bit flaky here; it says the options were either 16 or 32 OR 32 or 64; 16 would DEFINITELY cause problems, and 32 would hinder performance. 64MB however should not affect you much.)
- Core speed. According to Dell's website, the "controller speed" of the 7500 offered on the 5100 is 230MHz. IF they are referring to the core speed, this will also lead to lower than expected performance. The desktop version of the 7500 had a core speed of 290 MHz. The more I research this, the more I begin to think 2800 may not be THAT bad of a score given the hardware you have. I think it could be better, IF you had the ability to tweak the system extensively.
