5150 Power

My 5150, with battery removed and connected using the AC adaptor, shows a solid orange battery light, and will not turn on. I'm not encouraged by the other power management posts, but anybody have a suggestion? Putting the battery back in doesn't help.

Dead motherboard as I have. The jack comes off the motherboard because of the design of the power cord.

Sounds like it could be resoldered...what did you do (was it under warranty?)

I am having the same problem. Did you replace the motherboard, or is there another option?

Haven't done anything yet, although I have considered tossing it out the window.

Toss it out! It was an expensive computer. I negotiated with Dell. They will fix it and give me a 90 day warranty for $300. I know it sounds like alot, but what are the options. I paid over $1000. for this laptop when i purchased it last year. It is my son's - he uses it at college.

i had the same problem twice and luckily my laptop was still under waranty the first time, the dc plug is very poorly reinforced and easily breaks free of is solder points. if this is the case for you, if your handy with a soldering iron, it is not hard to fix. i did it myself the second time...

in order to get to the female connector to resolder it, you must dive in deep, so to speak. the connector is on the backside of the motherboard. it has been awhile since i have done the repair, but i do remeber i had to take apart literally everything in the laptop case to get to the motherbaord and remove it. once you have the motherboard out it should be a breeze.
