a good cooling pad

Question

I recently got an XPS M1530 (refurb) and am so far happy with it. It does get a bit warm and I'd like to get a decent cooling pad for it. I've checked the usual suspects for what's available and have seen some that are terrible to some that are OK. Searching the boards here has netted me a few ideas, except most of them are more than a few years old. Products change over time.

So, what brands do you XPS users like? I don't want to spend a ton of money (say under $50) and want something that will work well on both desk and lap. There are some from what I would call the "gamer" suppliers, but they tend to be steep. Just need something to keep things cool.

And if it matters (it may), I have the 9-cell battery on mine, so the back edge is already lifted up a bit. This looks like a great forum-- glad I stopped in!

It'll no doubt be a little big for the M1530... but Zalman's ZM-NC2000 is a great laptop cooler:

I use one myself... and I know someone else who's bought one on my recommendation, and is very happy with it :smileywink:

I don't know if you're going to be able to pick one up for $50 though?

Thanks to you both for the suggestions-- I'll look for those on line as our local stores in this backwoods don't carry much. Little more than I want to spend, but if I only have to buy it once, that makes the difference. One can get the cheapo T***** for under $50, but too many folks have had trouble with them. If I can't find anything I like locally, I'll see about these - - -

IMO a laptop cooler isn't really necessary if you have the 9 cell battery for the XPS M1530 which props it up at the back. It really helps with airflow, often mine has been on nearly all day and I've never been able to feel the heat through the table form it, which was the case with my old Inspiron 1501.

If you have the 6 cell a cooler is a great thing to have though.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Mfinnan101, the left palmrest gets a bit warm (probably normal-- this is my first laptop) so I still think the cooler is a smart idea.

I did get one, a Belkin Wave, which unlike the others, pushes air under the laptop, therefore not drawing needed air away from the fan intake. With the bigger battery, it does raise the back edge a bit when I have it on a desk, but it is workable and the angle isn't bad on my wrists or hands. While in my lap, not a problem at all.

As an IT person, with computers I always figure cooler is better for longevity. Yeah it may be a bit of overkill, but if it helps me net a year more from the HD, it's money well spent.
