Alienware M14X WLAN Hardware
Hello,
I bought a Alienware M14X laptop in 2011 for educational/home use. I recently upgraded the hard drive and noticed that my WLAN card has only two wires connected to it. There are no loose wires and no indication that an additional wire was ever there. Doing an internet search, I found that it is supposed to have 3 (for my 3x3 MIMO card). Is this an oversight during construction and what are my options now? My computer is out of warranty but I am looking toward getting this fixed.

Hi Eires,
M14X goes with the below WLAN options.
Intel® Wireless 6250
Intel® Wireless 1000
Intel® Link 6205 (India and Russia)
M14X WLAN has only 2 wires connected to it. (Please refer to the attached picture below.) Please let me know if you are able to connect through WLAN.

I am able to connect through WLAN and have been since I bought the computer. My question is about whether the Killer Wireless-N 1103 card that I bought as part of the computer deal from Dell in late 2011 is supposed to have 3 wires connected to support the 3x3 MIMO array. I have done further research and found that it is indeed supposed to have 3 wires connected to achieve maximum throughput on 5 GHz and dual-band networks. How can I correct this flaw in the construction of my computer from Dell?

It isn't necessarily a flaw in construction - or design. The card you bought is called OEM - original equipment manufacture(r or d). That means it may or may not have the same feature set as a manufacturer-sold retail card - very often specifications vary in OEM parts. Unless it's not working as designed, it's not worth spending money fixing (you are post-warranty so any repairs would be at your expense).

My point is that I bought it through the Dell website when I was configuring my laptop, for an additional price. It was specifically mentioned as supporting 3x3 MIMO technology. When I opened the laptop for the hard drive swap and saw only two wires, I did some research and found that a 3x3 MIMO array does need three wires (implied 3 antennas as well) to function at that speed. If I paid more at construction for this very feature, shouldn't it already be included? Is it up to the end user to police Alienware/Dell to make sure they include everything you pay for?
