AMD Switchable Graphics Stuck on Intel HD Graphics 4000

Hi,

I have an InspironR Special Edition 7520 and my AMD 7760 2GB will not activate or do any graphics processing. It is stuck on the Intel Graphics. I am running windows 8.

-My laptop is set on high performance and is plugged in.

-I ran NovaBench and it used the intel graphics card

-FurMark detected Intelgraphics as my main graphics card

-I ran a small game called "Slender: The Arrival" on the lowest settings it could barely handle it

-During the game and the graphics run I had Catalyst Control Center Up and it showed 0% usage of the graphics card, indicating it failed to switch

- All the drivers are up to date, per the windows solution and from downloading them from the AMD website.

I would like a solution to either, have the switch start working, or to change a setting so only the graphics card is constantly used. If this does not work I fear I'll have to return the laptop for faulty hardware.

Thanks

Hi Nikhil D,

Thank you for the timely response, and for your time and effort in helping.

I am running windows 8, so I do not have a start button and I am having trouble finding All Programs. I searched my Program files and the same for x86 and I cannot locate the Catalyst Control Center. I even used the search by hitting the windows key and it cannot locate it.

Is there some place I can download the Control Center?

Hi kibbel,

Yes, you need to manually add every game using the catalyst control center.

Find the below steps for ATI Switchable Graphics:

  1. Click the Start button and select “All Programs”.
  2. Click Catalyst Control Center.
  3. Click Power and select Switchable Graphics.
  4. Choose an application/game from the list or browse and select an application and assign the appropriate GPU.

Try to play the game and post the results.

Thanks for the attempt jepsy

Unfortunately, when I right click -> Graphics Properties - > it just pulls up Intel Media and Graphics Control Panel.

I've looked all around in that control panel and found nothing to set any games manually or anything. It just gives me options for the Intel Graphics and Media Control...

Nikhil:

I found how to get to the start menu, but I don't have the Catalyst Control Center, nor am I able to download it and locate it through multiple tries.

Could it be that my video card is defective and that the computer isn't recognizing it?

Thanks

hi kibble

i'm just new here in this forum for I have bought a newly dell laptop last past 2 days ago to ask a question, but luckily I've saw your thread and it happens that I know where to find this catalyst control center:

-right click on your desktop there you will find:

Graphics Properties

Configure Switchable Graphics

you can either click one of the two and set the game manually.

btw, do you know where to find the boot on cd-rom or boot on usb in BIOS of this dell inspiron 15 3521?

1st day I bought my laptop, I have the worst problem than yours, my catalyst control center doesn't show up and a window keeps on popping up saying that I my amd doesn't install properly, so I go here: www.dell.com/.../04 and I download the video driver, now it works just fine, try 'em, they might work like a charm!

btw, do you know where to find the boot on cd-rom or boot on usb in BIOS of this dell inspiron 15 3521?

I'm sorry I do not know where to find the boot on cd-rom or usb in BIOS :/

And while your answer did help a little bit (I downloaded the AMD Graphics Driver), it did not fix the solution. It added the Catalyst Control Center and the Switchable graphics. But none of them would open when clicking on them. Even after restarting the computer multiple times.

I'm really pretty lost.

Well, no matter what I try, the CCC will not open. I will wipe my computer and try again. But this is very disappointing stuff Dell. Thanks for your help Nikhil and I'll keep you updated

Hi kibbel,

I suggest you to try installing the graphics drivers for Inspiron 7520 from this link: http://bit.ly/qnEpR

After the installation of drivers open “Catalyst Control Center”. Follow the steps to open the “Catalyst Control Center” and to switch the graphic card.

  1. Right click on the Screen .
  2. Select “Catalyst Control Center” from the list.

The page looks as follows:

Select “Browse” and check if the game or the application that you are using is listed in the page. If the application or game is not listed, browse for it on the computer under the “Other Applications” area and click “Browse”.

Steps to assign applications to GPUs:

  1. In either Standard View or Advanced View, click “Power “à “Switchable Graphics”. The screen looks as follows:
  2. Check that the application for which you want to assign a GPU is listed in the page. If it is not listed, click “Browse” in the “Other Applications” area to browse for and select the application; it is added to the list. Only one application can appear in the “Other Applications” list at a time.
  3. Click the GPU selection button next to the application to select the appropriate GPU.
  4. Click “Apply”.

When applications are started, they run on their assigned GPUs. For applications that do not have an assigned GPU, a message dialog box may appear prompting you to select one. In this case, click “Configure” in the dialog box to select the appropriate GPU.

After following the above steps try playing the game and check.

So your original solution did not work. I wiped the computer and tried again but unfortunately CCC or any of the other options won't open when I download the drivers/software that puts CCC on my computer.

Any other recommendations, is returning the laptop the best option now?

Hi kibbel,

I would like to know if the graphics card drivers were reinstalled after reinstalling operating system.

If not please use the below link to install the graphics card drivers:

  1. Download and Install the Latest Video Drivers and BIOS from the link: http://dell.to/T2hKYc
  2. Click the above link, enter the service tag of the computer and select the operating system.
  3. Install the Intel HD Graphics drivers and AMD drivers listed under video.

Check the functionality of the computer by playing the same game and post the results.
