Audio Volume displayed
When my Inspiron was "new", changes in the volume forced a display of green bars on the screen.
Something that I did made that go away, and I'd like to get it back.
I am NOT talking about he volume control on the task bar. That's still there, and just fine. I'm talking about a visual display of volume that appeared each time the volume buttons were moved.
Does anyone know what I'm referrring to, what I did to make it go away, and how to get it back?

The green bars you are referring to are the On Screen Display (OSD) for the sound driver. Check the properties in the sound driver software to see if there is an option to enable and disable the OSD. Otherwise, you may need to reinstall the sound driver. Without knowing what type of Inspiron you have or what type of sound card is in your Inspiron, it's difficult to pinpoint the actual problem.

In my case I reinstalled Windows XP, then I installed the sound driver but the bars are not showing up anymore.

The window is called the volume meter.. but I'm sure it is what DeltaRho is talking about.
I checked all over the settings for the sound (from the control panel) and was not able to find a place for the OSD enabling.
I have an inspiron 5150 and the sound card is a SigmaTel driver version: 6.14.1.3794 from 4/25/03
anyone knows how to enable it?

I had a strong hunch that it was the Quickset that had done it.
I reinstalled it, and found that it was activated I was getting a display onscreen. It wasn't the one I had remembered seeing in the past, but at least it was providing SOME visual indication.
However, I decided that the OSD wasn't worth the overhead and hassle that Quickset appeared to be causing, so it's now gone along with the overhead.
For what it's worth, the answer to the display was NOT in the sound or audio driver settings. I went over all of them with a fine tooth comb, and couldn't find anything in them that provided for an OSD.

I guess I can close the support 'ticket' I opened.. you will not believe it, but in one day you helped me a LOT more than 2 tech guys who could not understand what I was talking about.
I installed the quickset and there it is :)
This is out if topic with this section of the forum (so let me know if I should post it somewhere else)
According to the install cd, quickset helps with:
wireless network connection,profile management
power management schemes
battery info
desktop font scaling
volume status :)
display brightness
radio/wireless activity
internal network card activity (depending on your system)
presentation mode
do you find any of this useful/not useful?
What do you (cmivxx) mean when you say: "it never responds as it says it does"?
