Battery problem, not charging

My laptop is Dell Inspiron 1545 and I use Windows Vista. My battery was damaged one years ago and I used my laptop only by plugging in. But I replaced my battery today, The battery is good and the laptop is also working on battery. But the problem is that the battery icon is showing "plugged it, not charging". I uninstalled and scanned for new hardware change from Device Manager but the problem is not solved. Please give me a solution. Thank you.

Hi nomanchow,

I recommend you to flash BIOS from the link given below:

http://dell.to/ZmSs82

Note: While flashing BIOS connect the Ac adapter and make sure the battery has minimum 15% charge as this needs uninterrupted power supply. Do not use the system till it restarts and comes up to the desktop.

Flashing BIOS should resolve the issue. If the issue persists I suspect the problem is with the motherboard. Revert for further queries.

Hi DELL-Sujatha K,

I did what you recommended me to do but the problem is not solved. I also to BIOS setup after testing the battery, I got that my battery is all right but my adapter is not good (i cant understand why because I can see it is working) for the re-charging of the battery, it says Error Code 3600:0749.

I want to get rid of this problem. Please help me. Thank you for your response.

I am getting the same problem, I've tried updating BIOS, removing the battery and press the alien button for 10-15 seconds, Checked the wires (there's no reason why my wires would be damaged, this computer is only 4 months old!), tried other Alienware AC adapters, tips and tricks and nothing solved this!

When I updated BIOS the computer charged to 100% once, but then it didnt work again. I have 5% of power now, can't run BIOS again!

The biggest problem I see here is that A LOT of people are getting the same issue as me, for several years! and Alienware still haven't done anything about it!

Hi nomanchow,

I appreciate for the all the trouble shooting steps tried. This error message may be either due to faulty mother board or Ac adapter. Make sure the Ac adapter is connected to a known good wall outlet.

Let me know what exactly is listed for Ac adapter in the BIOS screen. Restart the system and at Dell logo tap the F2 key and navigate to Battery information and check what is listed for Ac adapter.

The usual culprits for this kind of problem are:

1. power adapter

2. power jack

3. mainboard

4. I don't see a reason to update the BIOS if the system has been working fine for months/years !

============================================

Make sure the BIOS properly lists the power adapter - if not a Windows software problem can be ruled out.

A Dell power adapter can still power the laptop but "refuses" to charge the battery if there is a communication problem

between the adapter and the mainboard

The video might give you an idea how stuff works

Hi  DELL-Sujatha K,

When I tap F2 key a black screen says,

"The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available.

Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for best system performance.

To resolve try to reseat the power adapter.

Strike the F3 key (before teh F1 or F2 key) if you do not want to see power warning messages again.

Strike the F1 key again to continue , F2 to run the setup utility.
Press F5 to run onboard diagnosistics."

By the way my adapter is 65W AC adapter. Model LA65NS2-00 PA-1650-02DW.

Battery Information:

Battery health: Normal

AC adapter = unknown

You can order a battery online by visiting www.dell.com

Only Dell batteries should be used in Dell notebooks, and Dell batteries can only be purchased through Dell.

A normal characteristic is rechargeable battery is that its operating duration decreases over time. The battery may eventually need to be replaced . Based on this characteristic , consumers battery may not be covered under warranty.

"faizalenu"

Thanks for your info and "KNOWN GOOD Troubleshooting"  - I didn't know how wrong I was with my previous post.

I hope that the user doesn't buy a new battery  - that might be very costly and not even fix the unknown adapter problem.

Just putting this out there.  The ONLY way to know what the problem is is KNOWN GOOD Troubleshooting.

Try a known good battery.  If it doesn't charge, it is probably not the battery.

Try a known good A/C adapter.  If that doesn't work, it is probably not the A/C adapter.

If both of the above doesn't work, replace the A/C adapter an the D/C-In (this relays power, and it could be its own part, or part of the motherboard, an I/O board, or bottom plastics).  If the system doesn't recognize the power source as "good", it will protect itself by not charging it.  If the DC-In is not working properly, you won't have enough wattage to charge the battery.  If the charging circuit on the motherboard is bad, you will get the same thing.

If the AC adapter is unknown, the battery WILL NOT charge.  Try a new Dell (NOT third party) adapter first - if that doesn't solve the problem, you have a bad power jack or mainboard.
