Battery will not charge
I have a dell inspiron 6000. When I plug ac adapter ; the following message is displayed
" your system will operate slower and battery will not charge. please connect a dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system operation"
Battery is not charging. Anyone out there can help me please?

First, update your BIOS. Go to our support site (http://support.Dell.com) and click on the Drivers & Downloads link. Use your service tag to filter the downloads and then select the BIOS update files. Chances are that will resolve the issue.
If that doesn't work, check the green light on the adapter to confirm its working. Next, the adapter plug that goes into the connection on your motherboard has a small pin in the center. That pin is what controls the charging of the system. (I'm not an electrical engineer so don't ask for more details. :) ) If that pin is bent or broken it will cause the battery not to charge. Bent, you may be able to straighten it out. But if its broken you may need to replace the cable and/or adapter.
Those are the quick and easy things to check first. You may also want to pop out your battery and push the self diagnostic button and see if the LEDs on it light up. You can find a service manual for the system on the support site (linked above) that will give you the specific LED light diagnostics.

Thanks Todd. I have done the tests you mentioned. It didn't work. Apparently the problem is with the power jack on the motherboard.
Looking into repair or replacement of the motherboard. assembly part no. is W9260. but most available parts are W9259.
Can anyone please advise the difference between those two part nos.? both are advertised for Inspiron 6000.
