beeps with every keystroke, even when system muted
Hi -- My XPS M140, running Windows XP 2005, has recently started emitting a loud beep with every keystroke, and repeated beeps with a held-down key. It beeps even when the whole system is muted. The beeps seem to be coming from the built-in speakers. The beep sounds like a very short stroke of a wooden mallet on a high-pitched xylophone bar, always the same note, not a normal system sound, almost electrical. Recently I installed Windows 2007, and recently my CD/DVD drive also stopped working, and I have felt mild shocks from the screws in the computer's body before. I don't know if these things are related. I know, I know, the computer is in pretty bad shape, but it works well regardless. This beeping is driving me nuts, though. Any ideas on how to stop it from beeping?

I fixed it myself! In case someone else's computer does the same thing: Even though I've been trying to fix this for weeks, just after I posted the above note I noticed that upon restarting the computer it briefly flashed a screen saying "running in Manufacturing Mode: to return to Normal mode press Fn X". Well, it took me 5 restarts to get that whole message, but it worked! I repeatedly pressed the Function key and X upon restarting, and it works like a dream. No beeping! I can type sanely again!

I only had this problem a few minutes but it worked perfectly again after Fnct. X.
