Black Screen > Log in password

Hello all-

My apologies if this is not in the correct forum...

I'm attempting to diagnose an issue with my mothers laptop, a Dell Vostro 1015. I've completed a thourough diagnostic test using dell software, no issues were detected.

Symptoms:

Pc screen suddenly goes black (generally when typing, but not always), and stays black unless I press the power button. After pressing the power button the black screen turns into user password login screen. After entering the password, and logging in, I am immediatley brought back to my last task, web page, etc..

Also, when logged into guest acccount, symptoms occurr more frequently,  but when logged intt Admin account this issue has occured just 2 times.

Any advice, tips or ideas would be truly appreciated.

After talking with my mother I realize I mis-spoke/wrote..

99% of the time the screen turns black when typing, only 2 times, ever, has it gone black screen on when not typing. It does not matter whether she is in admin or guest account,

Hello Jshadle 74,

There are few steps I would suggest which would help us in isolating the issue. Please follow the steps:

1. Run the Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA / ePSA) Diagnostics
Run the test and check if gives any error code. Note down the error code and update me with the same, would let you know the next course of action. If the test passes on all the hardware components, follow the next step.

2. Check in Safe Mode if the screen goes blank.
-- Restart the computer.
-- Keep tapping F8 at the Dell Logo Screen.
-- Once the computer enters Advanced Boot Option, select Safe Mode.
-- Press Enter.
-- Check if the computer is doing the same in safe mode.

3. Connect an external monitor to the computer and check if the monitor screen goes blank. This would help us isolate if it the computer or the screen that is causing the problem.

Please try the steps and write back, would be glad to assist you further.
