blank screen/loud buzzing sound

Hi Everyone,

So just wanted to get a feel from the community as this is my second problem i am having with my alienware m17x r4.

1st problem was while playing games my screen would go blank and a loud buzzing sound would occur, they fixed it by replacing my graphics card. Which did stop the problem for about 2 years.

The problem now that has started to happen is, the screen will go blank but everything is still on, the pc will restart and windows gives me this error message:

( i did preform the system check and all areas where ticked green)

So after a day now, the screen is starting to go blank again but this time with the loud buzzing sound, when i restart the pc all is fine until i start playing games then it happens again. it varies from just a blank screen with a automatic restart or just a blank screen with the buzzing sound.

i called tech support and they think its my graphics card. Can anyone else shed some light with there previous experience to this and what the fix would be? i am out of warranty but willing to pay as long as the problem is pin pointed and fixed.

Hi xcentrik,

The BSOD bugcheckcode - 116 refers to the display driver and hence the video card. Check this link for a list of bsod errors - http://bit.ly/1NZ1sZG- as specified by MS.

Does the system overheat while playing games? Could you try reinstalling the video driver from the vendor site - nvidia - geforce.com / ati - amd.com? Make sure remove the old drivers - restart and do a clean install of the new driver. Also update the BIOS from support.dell.com - http://dell.to/1kGWIcI- this might fix the issue.

If you are able to open up the machine, then I would suggest to clean the air vents and the fan with a can of compressed air or a small vacuum cleaner.

If nothing works, then you would have to replace the video card.

Keep us updated.

Hey,

So i ran a few individual diagnostics every time i run the Graphics card and there is some sort of strain. It shuts down. Everything else comes up with no error. So i am confident to say it my graphics card.

Hi xcentrik,

Am glad you were able to isolate the issue to be with the graphics card.
