Blue Screen - Frozen Computer - Help!!

I was loading some software for an aircard onto the company laptop.  The software called for rebooting after installation.  I had left my flash drive in the usb port and I think it has a corrupted win32 on it (that's another issue).  Anyway, now the laptop is stuck at a blue screen.  I can't get it to reboot, turn off, anything.  I've got the original disks that came with the system but I can't even get them to get the system going.  HELP!

Welcome to the forums :emotion-21:

What model laptop is it, and what OS is on it?

If it's stuck on a blue screen, and you're unable to do anything, you'll have to do a hard reset, by disabling power to the laptop - i.e. turning it off at the mains.

Try rebooting it again?

If the same thing happens, restart it again, and keep hitting F8 during the boot process, to get into the boot menu.

Choose Safe Mode, and hopefully it'll boot to the desktop?

Assuming it does, either try uninstalling the aircard software, or do a System Restore, to just before you installed the aircard software.

If you can't do any of those, you may have to resort to a 'repair' install?

Unless the laptop is still under warranty of course, in which case you should contact tech support first?

It is a Dell Latitude D505 with Windows XP.  I have tried Ctrl-Alt-Del.  I have unplugged the power supply (darn those battery backups that keep things going when the electric is off!! :-) ).  It remains a blue screen and I can't get it to turn off to reboot or anything.  The only discs I have are the ones that came with it that say "already installed on your computer" - I don't have a "repair" disc that I know of.  I've been trying to get it to read the operating system cd but it doesn't even seem to respond to that.

Thanks for any suggestions/help you can give me.

There isn't a 'repair' disc as such.  It's an option you get, after booting from the OS disc you got with the laptop.

Here are a few links you might find handy (assuming you can at least get it to boot from your OS disc):

Dell's 'How to re-install Windows on a Dell computer'

Dell's 'How to Reinstall Microsoft Windows XP'

Official Microsoft (with screenshots) 'Install Windows XP'

+

'Repair Windows XP' - with screenshots of each step.
'How to repair XP' - with screenshots of each step.
