"BOOTMGR is missing" error after reformatting HDD
Hey everyone.
I'm trying to fix an Latitude D600 for my cousin. It was chock full of viruses, so using Hiren's BOOT CD, I did a clean wipe of the entire drive. Somehow in the process, something was messed up.
Now, whenever I try to boot anything from the USB (The CD drive did not work before and still does not work, even though it's recognized), I receive the "BOOTMGR not installed" error.
Anyone run into this problem or know what I can do?

Originally I was trying to boot a copy of Windows XP (TinyXP). And you can install Windows from USB, I'm not sure why you're saying you can't.
I then put Hiren's BOOT CD back on the USB, to see if I could do a MEMTEST or even wipe the drive again, but I received the same error.

boot what from the USB?
BOOTMGR not installed error is to be expected since you wiped the hard drive
Windows XP does not install from USB

We'll ignore the fact I'm trying to run XP and focus on the fact that NOTHING will boot from the USB now.
I need to do something about that.

Not Microsoft Windows XP, but you can go and continue to play with whatever you are doing.

First of all : I am not familiar with Hiren's Boot Cd as I use other tools. You wrote you used Hiren's Boot CD to wipe the harddrive.Does that mean you booted from this Cd? Because later on you stated the cdrom is recognised but you cannot boot from it and never did. It's actually a bit confusing.
Anyway - back to the basics:
To boot from hdd, cdrom or USB one has to enter the BIOS and change appropriate settings.
As your hdd is wiped you have to make sure that the BIOS is pointing to your Cdrom. If the cdrom is recognised by your system and contains the WinXP cd the setup should start automatically....
If your cdrom does not work at all and you want to use a USBstick to install WinXp,Win7 or whatsoever your BIOS must point to the USBdrive. It must be clear that this USBstick must be bootable and therefore specially prepared. For example you cannot just simply "copy" one bootable device to another one - I do not know what you were trying you are not specific enough.
You are right there are tools that make it possible to install Win7 etc. from USB see link below.
