Can a MS optical trackball coexist with a Synaptics touchpad?
according to MS, new optical trackball should basically work without installing its software (and uninstalling the 5150 touchpad), but while cursor and right button do work, left button won't work even though it does work on a dell desktop in the office running same XP/SP2. all MS could suggest is that i contact dell/synaptics to figure out if there are any settings to change that will allow it to work. can't find anything on websites addressing this issue, so i'm trying here.

I've been using a Microsoft trackball with a synaptics touchpad on an Inspiron 4100 for almost three years, now. I just installed the drivers that came on the CD that came with the trackball.
I had no problems using either the touchpad or the trackball.
Recently, my cursor has started drifting or racing around the screen but I believe that this is a completely unrelated hardware problem.

If you really don't want to uninstall the touchpad at all, I don't see a way around this.
However, you could do what I did: I uninstalled the touchpad, then installed the trackball using Microsoft's supplied software, then I re-installed the touchpad using the latest drivers from this site.
The touchpad installation software only cautioned against removing earlier versions of the touchpad driver; it didn't seem to have any objections to co-existing with the trackball driver. In fact, the drivers for both are nicely integrated under the mouse section of control panel.
