can mouse and touch pad coexist?

Question

Hi: Dell Support tried to offered many solutions to the problem I had with freezeups  after installing and using a Dell 922 AIO printer on my Inspiron 1000, but nothing worked-- so I have used PC Restore to start over.  I'm checking everything I install to make sure there are no conflicts or problems.  I want to use a Microsoft Optical mouse; the readme file on the CD says to uninstall any other pointing device.  Does this include the Touchpad?  This doesn't make practical sense since I would have no way to move the cursor while trying to install the mouse (although keyboard shortcuts could be used, I suppose). Thanks, --RA

What I had to do was to reinstall the touchpad drivers after attaching mouse.  Everything works as it should now.  I can either use the touchpad or mouse.  Worked for me anyway.

You should not have to uninstall the touchpad drivers when using your optical mouse.

I use an optical mouse myself on my 6000 but have not installed the optical mouse drivers but instead just use the generic ones included in XP. It works fine for me but unless you want to program your buttons in some specific configuration then the optical mouse drivers are not necessary.

The reason I reinstalled the touch pad driver was the icon for the touch pad disappeared and the 'slide' function ceased to work properly.
