Cannot boot Inspiron Notebook Msg "Operating System Not Found"

Hello,

My 2 year old Inspiron Mini 9910, with Windows XP operating system cannot find the Operating System.

When I start the computer, it goes through some of boot up sequence, then displays the message ""Operating System Not Found".

I suspect the problem may be caused by a Malware infection, which I thought I had deleted.  The notebook was working fine for several days after I removed the infection.   I'm sorry I didn't write down what the infection was - this occurred a few weeks ago, before Christmas, and I was away on holidays when the notebook stopped  working.

I have the Operating System and Drivers and Utilities CDs that came with the new Notebook.

However, I do NOT have a portable CD/DVD drive, so cannot use these disks.

I copied the Operating System disk files to  a USB device and changed the  "Boot up Sequence" to look at the USB device first.

However, the  Notebook cannot find the  Operating system on the USB device, and gives the same error  ""Operating System Not Found"

How do I copy the operating system from the CD to the USB device, so the Notebook recognises the operating system?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Have a great day!  Julieanne

If indeed you have set the BIOS to have the laptop boot from the CD drive first, that message means that the BIOS was unable to boot to do that and is trying to boot from the hard drive which since it is brand new has no operating system to boot.

Where can I obtain a Boot disk CD, so that I can boot from the  CD drive?      I am using the disks which came with the Notebook when I purchased it.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions of what to do next, I would really appreciate it.

It's okay, it's working now,  setting up files from CD.  Thank you!

I can email you a utility that STEC emailed me that updated the firmware and restored my 16Gb...  Dell should have this available to everyone.. Waste of peoples money to send netbooks back and buy SSD..

Hello,

If you send me an email (decipher it below) I will respond with the utility that S-TEC sent me a year or so ago. Has worked for quite a few I believe..

Alternatively you can try and download the file I just uploaded here = DOS_Based_Upgrade_Utility.bmp, which you'll need to rename to a .ZIP instead of a .BMP. Just update/added a couple screen shots on how to download and save..

RIGHT CLICK AND SAVE TARGET AS....

en.community.dell.com/.../dos_5f00_based_5f00_upgrade_5f00_utility.bmp.aspx

No Guarantees with this. I'm just a guy trying to help..
