Can't input audio signal through a microphone

I reinstalled my Windows XP OS in my 630m laptop.
I installed the SigmaTel audio drivers listed in the drivers list. But I could not input audio signal through a mic.I also installed Chipset drivers.
Any Suggestions?

Do you mean the audio works in every other way except the mic? And the mic is one that was working with the laptop before the reinstall?

If so, try this test:

> Open 'Sounds & Audio Devices Properties' (right click on the volume icon on the taskbar and click 'Adjust Audio Properties', or go to the Control Panel and click 'Sounds & Audio Devices Properties').

> Select the Audio tab. Click on 'Volume' under 'Sound Recording' (not Sound Playback).

> Click in the 'Select' box underneath the 'Microphone' control.

> Drag the mic volume slider all the way up.

> Click on 'Advanced' under the microphone select box. Check the 'mic boost' box.

Now open Windows Sound Recorder under Start/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment. Click on the red Record button and then speak into the mic. If the green line moves then the mic is working and the signal is getting into the system.

Everything with the audio is good except with the mic.
The mic was working good before the reinstall, i.e., I could input audio signal.
The system was formatted, after which this problem has come up.

When you say you can't input audio, does that mean you can't record sound as per the test I described above? Or do you mean you can't hear the mic signal thru the speakers/headphones, which is a different problem?

When you installed the chipset and drivers, did you first install Dell Notebook System Software which is under System & Configuration Utilities?
