Charging Port / Adapter Issue
I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop that needed a new battery and charger.
I bought the GP952 85Wh battery. I also bought the 90w-AC Adapter Part Number J62H3
It worked for a while, but now, it will not power up. When I plug in the adapter, the little blue light at the end of the adapter immediately shuts off. At times, I can smell metal. My guess is one of two things. First, that the charging port is damaged and is shorting out when I plug in the adapter. Second, I purchased the wrong adapter and it is shutting it self down.
Can anyone please verify that the adapter should work? Is there any way to test the charging port?
By the way, I did test both with the battery plugged in an with the battery removed.

If the LED on the adapter goes off when you plug in the notebook end, it means the system board is bad.

It may be possible to have the board repaired - try www.aqstech.com for one reliable repair shop.

I am on my second Dell Inspiron XPS in the last 3 years and the only reason I bought the second one is the ac power receptacle failed. It is a poor design for a portable device and gets very sloppy very soon after you use it. Within a year the connection got very sporatic and I had to pull the power cord to one side or the other and hold it there to get it to charge and eventually it wouldn't charge at all and I suspected by the light on the charger that it might be shorting out. If you look into that receptacle , you'll see how complicated they've made it. There are spring connectors that probably loose their connectivity or bend and possibly short out after awhile. I'd only had the new one for a month when I started worrying about how wobbly it was getting. This won't help you but your problem might be related to mine.
