The two most common causes are overheating (is the fan running, and/or is the system unduly hot)? Run the Dell diagnostics - F12 at powerup - to verify the fan operation --- or a faulty system board.
If this only happens while it is being uses with battery and not with powercord, then a cell or cells in battery might be going bad. There are certain batterys that are recalled by Dell that were purchased from Sony that had issues. I would check to see if your battery is one of the one's that is recalled and get a replacment. The link below shows which systems and the serial numbers to check to see if you have one..
If the laptop is shutting off while the charger is plugged into it or if it is being used by the battery without charger then the system is overheating and needs to be taken apart and cleaned out, then have new thermal paste re-added
Also does it just power off without anything showing on the screen? does it get a blue screen before it turns off completly?
