D600 Heat Issue -- Again

I know this has been discussed at length, but I wanted to know if anyone knows if Dell is replacing D600s that have this problem.

The left side of mine gets so hot that the palmrest is now actually discolored after 10 months of use.

I just called tech support and they passed me off to spare parts where I was told I could buy a new palmrest for $45.

I will call customer service again and argue with them that Dell should pay for this.

But what was interesting was that the tech support guy I talked to told me I could call sales and see if they would replace the whole computer. Anybody know if that's the policy now?

thanks

Update - I talked to Dell Customer Care and they say the palmrest is not covered by the warranty and they won't replace it. Very annoying. Doubt I will buy a Dell again in the future.

I wouldn't call customer care. I would call tech support and tell them that it was caused by excessive heat due to a flaw in the design or construction because from what you're saying and what I see that is definitely the case. Point #1. This is only on the left side. Point #2 That is where the hard drive is and that is where everyone who ever complains about heat on a d600 says it's hot. It happens but I am very embarrased that a company I hold in high regard would not replace that under the warranty. It specifically states that problems due to a design or manufacturing flaw are completely covered. What do they think? That you have a gland disfunction that causes you to only sweat from your left hand?

Okay I'm happy to report that on my third call to Dell I finally got someone who recognized the palmrest should be replaced. (The first two tech support people I talked to told me I would have to pay for the part and install it myself).

The new palmrest has the thin layer of heat shielding (the discolored one did not) that Dell has added to this part.

So far I don't notice that the palmrest is much cooler, but I do seem to notice that the heat is now coming up from under the keys on the left side of the keyboard -- in other words, it seems that some of the heat is being deflected away from the palmrest and is finding other ways to escape. It doesn't matter too much -- as a result of the discoloring of my previous one, I've learned to type without putting my palms on the computer anyway.

Thanks very much for the advice of those here who suggested I keep calling Dell until I got a tech rep who would handle this in the right way.

The palmrest is the least of your problems.

Call Tech support & warranty ASAP a hard drive, as well as a new palm rest.

Wow, I thought it was me typing too much that caused the discoloration. I have exactly the same problem and mine is 10 months old. The discoloration is identical. I'm thinking that Complete Care should cover this.
