Dell 7720 mSATA boot

Hi all,

I purchased a Dell 7720 (contains 2 1TB HDD's) after speaking to Dell technical support who reassured me that when I install an mSATA drive, it is possible to install the OS on the drive and use it as the primary boot device.

So I received my 7720, plugged in the mSATA drive and cloned the OS partition to the drive. When I restarted the machine, behold... it is not in the list of bootable drives, however it has been recognized as an mSATA drive. After messing around with the BIOS for 30 minutes, I am unable to get it to be a bootable device.

So can someone please confirm if I am doing something wrong or if I have been mislead information from the support staff.

Thanks/

Hi disigma,

mSATA cannot be a used as a bootable device, however, it can be used as a storage device. mSATA is used for Intel Smart Response Technology. Intel Smart Response Technology is an Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) caching feature that improves computer system performance. It allows a user to configure computer systems with an SSD used as cache memory between the hard disk drive and system memory. This provides the advantage of having a hard disk drive (or a RAID volume) for maximum storage capacity while delivering an SSD-like overall system performance experience.

Please reply if you have any further questions.

Seems contradicted by Dell technician on this thread...

Some clarity would be appreciated - as I too have bought an mSATA drive - hoping to be able to boot from it and having trouble (after reading that it was possible).

Thanks.
