Dell 8500 Screen Issue

I turned my 8500 on yesterday to find that the screen was almost completely dark. Everything seemed to be working properly, but the screen is almost impossible to see. I was barely able to navigate my way to the system restore. Upon restoring the system, the brightness returned. I did not have the battery inserted and was using AC power at this point. However, after I turned the computer off and back on, the darkness had returned. I am unable to get the computer back to normal, even with multiple system restores. ANy help would be appreciated. This computer is only about 4 months old and has had less than 2 months of use!

Sounds like your backlight needs to be replaced. I'd call Dell and arrange for service.

While I have only once experienced this "dark screen at boot-up issue," am curious about what you mean by the "backlight."  I have the WXUGA 8500 with the nVidia 4200 card.

Thanks.

In simple terms, the backlight is what lights up the pixels (brightness). If the backlight fails, everything is extremely dark like you mentioned. Basically, your lcd screen is dead.

Since your warranty should still be in affect, I would call up Dell Support and get them to replace your screen.
