Dell E1705 Battery continuously charging

Hi all,

I just noticed that my Dell E1705 (Inspiron 9400) is indicating a continuous charge (Windows XP Pro, latest updates).   The machine is a year or two old.  The charge light blinks orange a few times (4-5 times) quickly then green once for a slightly longer time.  The icon on the Windows Task Bar indicates charging and currently at 98%.  It's been doing this for a day or more.

Do I need a new battery or is there something else going on?

Thanks,

Ray Porter

It does sound like the battery is on its way out.

Yep, that's what I was afraid of.  My hardware support colleague at the office said the same thing.

This machine is only a year or two old and it's almost never been run on battery.  I think the warranty just expired recently.  How long should these batteries normally last?

Thanks,

Ray Porter

I've got a little more information now.  I'd appreciate any feedback.  I don't mind buying a new battery if that's what's needed -- in fact, I'd love to buy a new battery since that would be the easiest fix but I don't want to do that if it won't solve the problem.  Here are a few more details:

1) Battery charge light on the laptop is flashing continuously -- 4-5 quick orange flashes followed by one, slightly longer green flash.

2) The power icon in the taskbar indicates charging -- 99% but the charge never finishes (been going since Monday night). It may have actually started when I plugged in the Canon camera's usb cable but that's never been a problem before.

3) If I unplug the AC line from the back of the laptop, the machine immediately dies -- no power at all.

4) If I remove the battery and press the check charge button on the battery, all the charge indicator lights briefly light up green (there are 5 little lights) which should indicate a full charge. However, they do go out almost immediately. Is that normal?

I've tried calling Dell paid support since my warranty actually ran out last August but didn't get anywhere since their systems were down and they were unable to process any paid support questions.  I'd just like to try and get an idea if a new battery will solve the problem before I buy one.

Thanks,

Ray
