Dell Latitude D600

I have two Latitude D600 Laptops.

No Sound on Headphones.:emotion-12:

Same sound drivers on both nothing turned off or mutted.

Tests Done

Connented to TV to play music no sound through the tv and surround sysytem:emotion-12:

Did the same test using same cable with Latitude D600 1 :emotion-1:got sound on the Tv loud and clear through surround system:emotion-1:

Plays Cds Dvdvs See all No sound.:emotion-12:

Re loaded drivers for sound no sound. :emotion-12:

In Bios on Latitude D600 2 showing Audio .

Sigmatel  Audio

when doing test via sound in controll pannel  Internal mike working fine when hitting next mike working sound out working but no sound from speakers or headphonesor line out:emotion-12:

System Manager no Problems.

All Drivers were downloaded from dell using system scan

Has the output of sound gone on the sound system on the motherboard ?

If so Can it be repaired or does it mean a new motherboard?

Hope that someone may be able to help

If you formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows and the drivers, and the audio was working before that, then it is probably an installation issue.

In the Device Manager does it say "Sigmatel"? If yes then at least the audio hardware is recognized which is a good sign. To really know for sure you need to run the audio tests in Dell Diagnostics. These interactive audio tests are designed to narrow down the problem to either the software or hardware. The tests are independent of Windows and drivers, meaning it doesn't matter if those are working correctly or not. To run Dell Diagnostics

1. Restart the computer and tap the f12 key as soon as it starts to boot up .
2. Select 'Diagnostic' from the boot menu. The computer will run its pre-boot assessment tests (PSA) before Dell Diagnostics starts. During the PSA you will hear some tones through the system speaker but this does not adequately test the audio hardware. Dell Diagnostics plays an instrumental piece of music complete with drums, so if you only hear some tones then you have only run the PSA.
3. Dell Diagnostics should open after the PSA tests, or you should see an option to open it. If you have ever reformatted your entire hard drive or replaced it then Dell Diagnostics will no longer be there as an option. In that case run it from the Drivers and Utilities (Resource) CD if you have one.
4. Select 'Custom', then the audio tests. (At this point - after you have opened Dell Diagnostic custom - if you can't find the option to select the audio tests that is a symptom of a failed audio chip.)
5. The tests will run. Alternate between using headphones and listening to speakers in case only one signal path is working.
The tests will play some audio and ask you whether you heard it.
6. If you don't hear the music during the test it definitely means there is a hardware failure.
7.If you do hear the audio during the test but not when you boot back into Windows, that almost always means the hardware is okay but there is a problem with the audio driver or with Windows.
8. Error codes: If you answer 'no' to any question that the test asks you, the test generates an error code that can tell a Dell technician that you answered 'no' to that question. The test does not know the exact component that has gone bad. Before answering 'no' to a question, make note of the circumstances at that point so you will know in general what the error code means.

If so Can it be repaired or does it mean a new motherboard?

It is on the motherboard. A workaround is a usb audio device. It can give you sound again but only through external speakers or headphones.

Jimco

Have done the Test from boot up using F12 and did the diagnostics.

Did not see any saying sound or refering to the sound onboard?

Got the Following

Start DTS Short Test

Test Result Fail

Error 1000-0146

Unit 0 DST Log Contains previous errors

I also did this test on the D600 with sound and received the same fail.

No Diagnostic utilities partion found insert Dell Driver utilities CD  -

Do not have any CD or DVD disks for these laptops.  Was given them not working but got them both working without loading windows one ok for sound 2 no sound.  Noted that they had previously been re formatted and Windows XP Pro was put on both no Diagnostic Utilities partion was on both computers I checked on this before I formatted them both and I put Windows XP Pro back on with no probmes on both but put all the drivers for both all went on ok  D600 2 still no sound at all.

That means that you ran the PSA tests and its shows that the hard drive is failing and needs to be replaced.  (The DST test failure. The DST log contains previous errors because someone had previously run the test one or more times and it had failed then too.) Dell Diagnostics is missing because either it had been wiped from the hard drive or the original hard drive has been replaced. (Dell Diagnostics resides in a hidden partition on the hard drive. When Windows is re-installed, you get the option of formatting just the c partition or the entire drive. Sometimes people choose to wipe the entire drive not knowing there are important partitions on it that will be lost.) When you replace the failing hard drive with a new one, when you are formatting it, if you create a FAT32 partition on it you can install Dell Diagnostics into that partition later. You can obtain it from the D600 downloads page under the Diagnostics category

After you format the new hard drive and install Windows on it, be sure to install the drivers in this order or else the Sigmatel audio driver will not be installed correctly. (This could be the problem with the audio on the computer now or it could be a failed audio chip.)

a. Dell Notebook System Software (on your downloads page expand the System Utilities category). Download, install and restart.

b. Next install the Intel Mobile Chipset software (expand the Chipset category). Download, install and restart.

c. Install the drivers including the Sigmatel audio driver (expand the Audio category).

Get these from the driver downloads page. When you get on the page use the dropdown box to select your Operating System.

Jim

There are no problems with the hard drives that are in the two D600.   As I cannot beleave that two hard drives have gone in both machine with one having sound and one not  I did a full  diagnostic on both D600  and they passed all Hard drive tests said no errors found.  So reserve judglemet on that score.

On the D600 that has no sound I will download the diagnostics utility and go from there as for loading the drivers in order I always firstly put the Intel Mobile chipset drivers .

Will let you know how it goes

Thank you for your help

I have built many pcs (desktops towers etc but not used to laptops.

It should be the Notebook System Software in XP for the Sigmatel to install correctly. You shouldn't have to redo the XP installation, just the NSS, Intel chipset, Sigmatel.

Sorry you got those codes. Here is something I am just passing on for what it is worth, an owner of an Inspiron 8600  once reported that he replaced the MB twice after getting a !B22071B code but the problem persisted. He then replaced the modem and the problem disappeared.

Open the compartment marked "C" at the bottom of the system and you'll see the modem.

Well removed modem and still no sound also removed the drivers for the modem redone the test with cd same code errors and no sound going into windows or when in windows no sound :emotion-9:

So how can I rectify the sound a new motherboard is not an option.

Is there any chance that it could  be the speakers and socket for headphones is faulty  in the windows test under sound in control pannel it shows a green light going up and down when I talk and when I click next I should hear what I said but no sound but the green light is going up and down although I cant hear it. How does the program work as it seems to hear and is sending the sound out ??????? I just cant hear anything.  If the chip on the motherboard is faulty how is the test prog still able to hear it to show it in the test. Rather confussed.

Would it be worth getting usb speakers to see if sound comes out of them ?

If you think not what options do I have to get sound on this laptop.

Usb audio device or PC Card slot sound card (these are not made anymore).

Is there any chance that it could  be the speakers and socket for headphones is faulty

The jack is in effect a switch that cuts off the audio signal to the speakers, so it is a possible culprit. Conversely if the speakers were bad or have a loose connection you would still get audio from the jack.

in the windows test under sound in control pannel it shows a green light going up and down when I talk and when I click next I should hear what I said but no sound but the green light is going up and down although I cant hear it. Your logic is correct. The mic jack is receiving an audio signal and it seems that the signal was recorded and played back. The test did not say that the chip is bad -- it said that you reported that you could not hear the audio during the test. The test was not designed to pinpoint individual components. It was for Dell Support to know that there is an audio hardware failure which meant that they would replace the MB since it had all of the components. They did not need to know which component was bad because they were not going to fix the individual component anyway.

Would it be worth getting usb speakers to see if sound comes out of them ?
.

That should produce audio but is not actually a diagnostic tool. Usb speakers are an external audio device that would substitute for the internal audio system, so they would not test the internal system which you already know is not working. When you connect an external audio device you go into the audio properties and select it as the default audio system (which de-selects the Sigmatel system). Best to think of usb speakers as being a modified form of a usb sound card, the difference being that the usb speakers lack a mic jack but do have integrated speakers. The "sound card" part -- the DA converters -- are built in.

There is no external device which would restore the Sigmatel system and play through the internal speakers. PC Bus cards could route the the signal back to the Sigmatel system but it was the Sigmatel that actually produced the audio through the speakers so if the Sigmatel was not working then that trick did not work. But to produce audio through external speakers or headphones there is a good variety of usb devices that should work.
