Try a BIOS clear:
Remove the battery, unplug the system and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then try powering up again.
If that doesn't get Windows to run, can you get into Safe Mode (F8 before Windows loads)?
If you can, you can then try flashing the old version back from safe mode.

did you try booting from another device such as a bootable cd/dvd or a usb drive?
i am noticing a common issue with these e6420 (no solutions however).
The issue im having with mine and sounds like your may have the issue as well. it wont boot anything except the bios setup. if you press f12 for boot menu no option will work except the bios setup. (not even diagnostics).
with my computer it one time out of every 30-50 attempts i will be able to load something. I unplugged cmos battery, i upgraded bios, i ran thorough diagnostics. no solutions and diag said everything was fine. but obviously its not fine.
i suspect it to be a motherboard issue. but it is most likely a bios problem. this sucks im going to have to buy another motherboard when i have a feeling that a solution will eventually come out.
