Dell Studio 1555 power on problem

When I turn on my Studio 1555, I immediately get a low beep, another low beep, a high beep, then it repeats 5 times. Then it pauses, then goes through it again.  This entire sequence also repeats 5 times.  This is all happening during POST. I get the Dell splash screen and the POST progress bar.  POST completes, no error messages, I briefly see the summary screen which appears normal. The screen then goes black with just the cursor flashing. I've tried booting from the CD drive instead of the HDU with both the Dell Drives and Utilities disk and the Windows disk, same results.  I've also tried holding the Fn key down when I power up, same results and no diagnostics run.  Any suggestions?

Hi rhchocolate,

5 beeps for this system model means RTC Power Fail. The possible cause could be COMS battery failure. Here's what you may try.

Drain the residual power from the laptop:

  • Disconnect any external peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) from the computer
  • Then remove the adapter and the battery
  • Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds
  • Reconnect the battery and the adapter
  • Try to restart the computer and check

If the issue persists, I would suggest you to re-seat the CMOS battery. Click Here, then click on Product manual to get the Service manual. Please ensure to follow safety instructions mentioned the manual.

Hope this helps.

I drained the residual power, same results.  I then reseated the CMOS battery, still the same results.

I've worked on PCs with alarms before. I see in the setup guide that 5 beeps means RTC Power Fail. I would expect that to sound "beep-beep-beep-beep-beep". Maybe this Dell is different, but it's not just 5 beeps.  The beeps go:

"[low-low-high] [low-low-high] [low-low-high] [low-low-high] [low-low-high]"

Sequence repeats 5 times throughout the entire POST process.

I see in the setup guide under 5 beeps that "Failure Coverage" says CMOS battery failure. The internal date and time were correct and running when I looked at them in Setup.  I did have to reset them after removing and reseating the CMOS battery, but it is still running.

Other suggestions?

Hi rhchocolate,

If the system time and the time is BIOS is correct, then it may not be an issue with the CMOS.

Please check if any keys are stuck on the keyboard. Please check individual keys. You may also try to re-seat the keyboard and check. Please refer to the manual as shared in my previous post.

Awaiting your response.

I checked the keyboard and reseated it, no change.  One thing I just noticed. Setup is indicating the HDD is 10GB. It's actually 320GB. I would think if there were a problem with the HDD it would still boot up off the CD when I change the boot sequence to go to the CD first, but it still doesn't boot.  Other suggestions?

Hi rhchocolate,

Thank you for the update. Please try the following steps.

Remove the keyboard from the computer. Then power on the computer without the keyboard connected. Check if you hear the same beeps.

Let me know the findings.

I'm having 100% the same exact problem, but have yet to find out the cause(s) or solutions. I know it's been a few years, but I am hoping you can tell me what you found out (assuming you did). Thank you.
