Dell XPS M1210

I am restoring a donated XPS M1210.  It will not turn on with power switch, when plugged in to power adapter, with battery installed.  If I unplug power supply and plug it back in, the laptop turns on by itself.  I replaced the power switch board, assuming the board was shorted out, but it did not change the situation.  I can turn off the computer by pressing and holding the power button until it shuts down.

Any suggestions where the issue may be?  I have performed a clean install and checked bios but find no settings that could affect this.  Assuming it is a hardware issue?

Hi newlifecomputer,

The problem could be with the battery or the connection of the battery on the motherboard, please try switching on the laptop only with ac adapter and removing the battery out of the computer. Check if the laptop is turning on. This will help us to isolate the problem between motherboard and the battery.

Please message the results.

DELL-Nikhil D:

I have tried starting this laptop both with the battery installed and without.  It only will start, automatically, when I plug in the AC adapter.  The power button will not start the laptop at all.  It will however turn off the laptop.  When it is running, it shows it is trying to charge the battery (which is a non dell part), but the battery is not taking a charge.  The laptop runs perfectly, other than the power button not working to start it.  Since the battery won't hold a charge, I hesitate to buy a new battery, in the hope it would start with a charged battery, using the power button.  Since the power button does not work with the AC adapter, I suspect it will not work even with a fully charge battery.  Sounds like a hardware problem, but I don't see signs of any other issues with the motherboard.

Does no one else have any ideas on this problem.  Nice little laptop but can't use it without plugging it in!

On some systems, the power button simply activates a relay directly under on the mainboard.  On others, it connects to a circuit board that attaches to the mainboard via a ribbon connector.  If it's the second type, replacing teh control strip containing the power button may work.  If it's the first type, or that replacement fails to work, the mainboard needs to be replaced.
