Did I break my screen?

I was picking up my laptop and my thumb accidentally slipped and pressed in on the LCD screen.  Something snapped, the screen blurred, and now about 3/4 of my screen is gray.  Is there anything cheap I can do to get this fixed?  Am I going to have to pay hundreds of dollars to get this fixed or have to get a whole new monitor installed on the laptop
thanks,

Carefully examine the screen - it sounds as though you cracked the LCD. If it's physically damaged, the only repair is replacement.

If you damaged the board behind the screen, it can probably be repaired for a couple of hundred dollars (vs. $500+ for a new panel).

if there isn't a visible crack in the screen it sounds like you may have broken the backlight.  however, i was under the impression the cold cathode backlight (like a really thin and long flourescent light bulb) was a single light and if it were broken the whole screen would be black.

the lcd is expensive, the cc is not so expensive but locating a replacement may be tricky.  try ebay first if you need the whole lcd.

I did the same, the very next minute I went on eBay and was able to find the replacement LCD screen for my old Inspiron 4100. It costed me $140.00. But remember to get the LCD screen with the casing, very easy to install a the LCD screen. Good luck.
