Difference between Notepad and iBook

For all that wonderful advice...as I would be making it a linux box ultimately I dont care about the O.S.I would also make sure that it has a 3yr. warranty as you said.And you also praised APPLE for its relaibility and service,so finally i've decided that I am going for a Apple ibook,the new one:

12'inch display 1.33Ghz 512 MB DDR SDRAM 40GB HD etc. $999

Finally,can you tell me if the G4 processor is reliable like the P4?

The G4 is fine, as is the iBook design - I've had mine for 3+ years now with no problem. If the small 12" screen isn't a problem for you, the system is very nice.

All manufacturers produce notebooks at all price ranges - Dells run $500-3000+; iBooks run $999-$3000+; IBMs run ....

Just make sure you're comparing the same level of systems when you buy.

I would strongly suggest staying away from any of the $500-800 notebook computers. ALL of them, no matter who makes them, involve compromises - today, that includes compromises that directly affect reliability and durability.

Do not buy ANY notebook computer with less than a 3-year warranty. Even on a $500 notebook, the cost of an out of warranty repair can be astounding - and exceed the cost of a new machine.

If you don't need PC compatibility, the Apples are highly regarded for reliability and service, and come with on major - they don't run Windows, which makes them far more resistant to trojans, viruses, and spyware - most of which is targeted at the Windows world.

Just offering some advice, and you don't have to take it if you don't want to. Macs are kind of expensive for what they are. I would rather buy a Dell, but that's just me. I'd actually rather buy an IBM, but they're way too much.

Thanks for your reply....the gateway system is for $1299..so as you said ..its a little too much for 1yr.warranty.I would appreciate your help if you could tell me how could i get a 600m system for around $1200.The closest thing I could find on dell site was this DELL INSPIRON 2200,please let me know if this is a good system or not.

Actually, if I saw the right Gateway, they're asking $1,200 for it, and that seems a little too much. You could get a 600m for less if you use the right coupons, and generally, Dells are better than Gateways. For the same price, Dell could probably give you a nicley configured 600m with a 3 year warranty.

Oh, wait. You're talking $1300 in Canadian dollars? I saw what I thought was the system you were talking about on the Best Buy website for $1200 US dollars. $1300 in Canadian is like $1000 here, right? That's not too bad for the Gateway, considering the warranty is only 1 year. Sorry, if you're in Canada, you're not going to be able to get a good coupon, which means you probably can't get the 600m for $1300 Canadian. If that's your total budget, just go with the Gateway.

There are new Dell coupons every week, so watch for them. A couple of good sites to try are www.slickdeals.net and www.xpbargains.com.

I have an iBook that is collecting dust now that I am using my i9100. I liked everything about the iBook except that it had more hardware problems than anything I've ever owned. Grant it Apple took care of everything with no cost to me until the warranty ran out. The CD combo drive decided to die and Apple wanted $700 to replace the drive. Instead of putting up with the problems I put the money into my i9100.

I would advise to you don't get the Apple unless you are running specific software only found on the Apple platform. If I remember correctly, Apple is moving away from the Motorola chip to the Intel chip anyway.

No matter what you decide to get. Get the best warranty you can afford.

$700??!?!?? That's ridiculous. You could buy a PC for that much.
