DIMM B seems to have a problem!

I have a Inspiron 1520

OS: Vista Ultimate

I have a problem with my 2nd memory slot - DIMM B

it started yesterday when i turned on my laptop, nothing happens other than the cap lock flashing for about a min.

this happened before, which i took the memory out and pop it back in and worked, however, this time, it doesn't.

Also, for now, i removed the ram and using it with just one ram underneath the keyboard, and it seems to be working fine but slow as vista need more than 2GB to run smooth.

I have tried different ram so i believe it's not a ram problem it's kind of the slot problem or motherboard, but highly unlike to be the motherboard as it seemed to be working before as i have said. Anyway.

Please ask for more info.

Thanks ever so much for your help!

If reseating the memory doesn't fix the problem, boot to the Dell diagnostics.  Run the memory test.  If a module fails, put it in the other socket.  If the failure follows the module, replace that module with a new one.  If the failure happens on only one socket, it IS a mainboard  problem - the socket is bad, and the mainboard will need to be replaced.

I think i missed a point that when i even have a ram in the slot in dimm b the laptop wont even start up!

but i would just like to know why it worked last time?

and is there other ways of checking because i currently do not have the tools to open the front!

Also if i do require a new motherboard, how much would it cost off dell and other retails

and how much would the cost of dell's installation without warranty of course!

Million thanks!
