Displaying image on a TV
Hello everyone,
I'm trying to display the image from my computer onto my TV. I've tried using a S-video -> RCA but the resolution ends up being up on the TV. I've also tried going from SVGA -> RCA but my laptop gives me the "No external display device attached" when I hit the CRT/LCD display button.
I've recently been suggested to try S-video output on the laptop towards an S-video input on my TV. But before I commit to buying yet another cable (not that they're incredibly expensive) I was just wondering if anyone knows if it will work?

Might work, might not. If it does, it will look terrible. S-video computer connections are aweful at best. If you don't have component video, VGA, DVI, or HDMI on your television, then don't bother using it for a computer display. You will only end up with a headache from a terribly unfocused image.

I've got the Y Pb Pr input on the TV... for HD... but does that qualify as HDMI? I know there's a specific cable for HDMI now (the little rectangular one, kind of looks like a USB cable but isn't)

Y Pb Pr is component video. The rectangular usb looking thing may be a hdmi connection. Go to the manufacturers website and look up the tv specs. Often, you can look at a diagram that defines the connections for you. I'm not sure, but there may be a hdmi on your pc. Generally if it has a Geforce 8600 it has a hdmi. What kind of TV, how old? Flat panel, CRT, digital projection, big box, what kind? I think this may be easier than you'd think.

The model number of my TV is the following: KV-36XBR450 (Sony Wega Trinitron). It's a flatscreen CRT (if that makes any sense...).
Ok, so, I'm ok with computers but ever since HD became popular, TVs have become a nightmare for me. Anyway, if you follow this link http://www.docs.sony.com/release/KV36XBR450.PDF you'll reach a .pdf of the manual for my TV. On page 16 are all the connectors on the TV.
The connector I found best suited for the job was number 9 (Component video - HD/DVD)
As for my video card, it's an 8600 GeForce, but the only outputs I have are for a regular monitor and Firewire (IEEE1394).

As you can see from my signature below I have an Inspiron 1520 with a 8600M GT video card. I also have a Sony Trinitron Color TV, Vega model KV-XR25 with a component video input. I have successfully connected the laptop to the component video input of the TV using a Dell S-video to component cable that looks the same as the one at this link with manufacturer's part number PG383. However the manufacturer's part number on the cable that I bought from Dell is PG382. The Dell invoice describes the cable as KIN-1520 - Kit for Inspiron 1520. Unfortunately I have not been able to find out the Dell part number for the cable. Therefore I suggest that you talk to Dell spare parts people (as I had to do ) if you want to order one.

This is really cool. I'll get right to that. The only thing I'm wondering about is that the component end of the cable appears to be female, so I would probably need a double-male cable in order to re-route to my TV (which only has the female connectors).

Yes you will need an additional component video cable with RCA male connectors at each end. Note that the Dell cable has a dongle which switches the video card to send component video to the 'S-video' socket. Therefore the image quality is good.

After calling a few stores, I was told that the S-video to S-video would be my best bet seeing as the signal couldn't really be re-converted to an HD signal.

Alright so I went ahead and bought the S-video to S-video cable at a local store for the simple reason that I could return it if it didn't do the trick. (The Dell cable would have taken a day or two to arrive and I'm sure I would have had to pay shipping on it) As was suggested by Sofu, the image was bad. Basically, the image shows up at an ok resolution, things aren't out of proportion, but it's impossible to read anything on the screen. That being said, you could probably watch a movie on it ok... but why go to that trouble when a DVD player can be found for about 40$ now?
Hopefully the S-video to component will be better. Before I go out and buy this though, could you do me a favor though Sofu? Can you tell me if you can read text on your tv sitting down (size 12 font preferably... something along the lines of what you would see typed in this forum without any zoom). The reason I'm asking this is because I'm primiraly thinking of using this set up to play video games... I need to see the text typed in a chatbox with about the same dimensions.
