Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as my understanding goes, only the "Advanced Port Replicator" works with the 8600 (well it is already a good docking station, but it's not called "Docking", it is not the USB port Replicator), the "D/Dock" is reserved to the Latitudes.

Couldn't you just get a USB port replicator for $80?

See, the USB one doesn't have a VGA out...you'd have to spearatly attach that cable...

Yes, but a USB replicator doesn't do evertything the APR does....it doesn't charge, have video out, have 100BT networking, etc.

did not realize there was an apr for the 8600.  the d/dock will work with the 8600.

Thanks for clarifying.  My wife just wants to use a full sized keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc.  She'd have a LAN cable at her desk for the network... so we'll probably just use the USB solution and save some $.

Silly question - I thought the port replicator was for when you didn't have enough sockets eg usb ports? If not, whats the difference, and which one do I need please (I want to be able to "snap" my lappie straight into power, keyboard and monitor)?

If you want to do that, you need the APR for the 8500/8600 (they are the same). Then you can simply snap it in to the dock, and it will get power, VGA, extra USB, serial, etc.
