Dropouts using Firewire Sound

I'm having trouble diagnosing a problem using the Firewire port with an Edirol FA101 digital sound box. When I use it to playback wave files, there is a dropout every 60 seconds. If I disconnect the mouse from the USB port, there is a static sound added to this dropout.
If I leave a mouse connected and disable the Ethernet onboard and the wireless card (a Dell 1450), everything works perfectly.
When the wireless card is enabled (and nothing else), the dropouts return.
I disabled the 1450 and used a Linksys USB wireless adaptor - and it worked without interruption with the Firewire.
With the 1450 enabled AND using a PCMCIA VX pocket D/A adaptor for the sound, I was able to get perfect sound without a problem.
So any ideas on what's up with the 1450 wireless card? Anyone have any experience with the Intel a/b/g version?

ok i may have found a reason for the sound glitching with firewire low latency audio. posting it here to help anyone else who might experience this.

ran into a post on the ableton live boards that linked to a acer laptop forum. basically the hitching was caused by the cpu polling the battery. ( which would explain why the glitch would happen every 6 seconds like clockwork). i disabled APCI for standard pc mode ..no irq assignement changed and all of my peripherals are still active and the glitching is fixed.

there is supposedly a less drastic fix that invloves just disabling the battery device in the  device manager. and you can just enable it when you need to be mobile with your notebook. cant say it works because i have tried it yet, but i will

thanks for keeping this thread going.

i believe i tried what you are about to try...to no avail.  i think i disabled every frickin device on my computer before i switched to standard pc.

with the 9300, it is definitely the mini pci card.  i have no crackles, just dropouts.

ive actually been using the built in soundcard in fruity and it works ok.  at least it is portable.  i use the fa101 when i mean business.

good luck, and im curious to hear if you figure out anything.

We've also had success with VM Pocket PCMCIA cards for portability. They are pro level PCM cards that come with a muli-headed adaptor that allows Balanced I/O as well as Digital and analog connections. Very suitable for field work.

We've bought them off eBay in the $200 range. They work without glitches in my 9200 and his Latitude.

When I'm in my home studio, I use the Edirol Firewire FA-101. Been great since I changed my wireless card to the Intel 2915 abg.

All the best!

ok i switched back APCI mode. disabling the battery device fixes my problem.

this is a much better fix as i get to keep the abilty to go into standby and preserve battery when off of the ac adpater.

just to clarify what my problem was. every ~6 seconds i would get a couple of sample pop or hitch regardless of what i set the buffer size too.

oh and if you using the internal sound check out this driver ... http://www.asio4all.com/
it an asio driver for laptop soundcards. it works great and drastically lowers latencies.

I just wanted to say "thanks" and to offer what worked for me.  I too had tried everything under the Sun.  I have a 9100 Inspiron with a Dell Wireless 1450 Dual-Band WLAN mini-PCI Card and was trying to run an M-Audio Firewire 1814 audio interface.  I was VERY lucky - all I have to do is disable the wireless card under Device Mangaer.  I don't even have to change the BIOS settings.  Voila!

The advice on this board can be hard to locate with the tremedous number of posts but it has saved my duff before and probably will again.

Best of luck to all those still searching for a solution.

Instead of monkeying with Device Manager, try Fn+F2.  This should toggle the card on and off.

Doh!  Thanks Shane, that's a useful tip.  I use a USB keyboard all the time and haven't been using the Fn keys lately...
