E1405 Black Screen at Boot Up
A couple of days ago, when I pressed the power button to turn on the computer, I got a black screen. Other users have reported similar problems, but none that I have seen is like the problem I am experiencing. It can't be a problem with the screen because I am able at times to get the computer to boot, and then the screen is fine. I have a rescue disk and placed it in the drive-- maybe that is why I can sometimes get the computer to boot. When the screen is black, I can very faintly see the log in box sometimes. When I was able to, I pressed F12 and ran diagnostics. All tests were passed. I guess I will have to spend a day on the phone with the folks in India, but I thought I would give the Forms a try. Luckily, I purchased an extended warranty. However, I am hoping not to have to start all over again-- it never goes smoothly and always takes up lots of time and drives me nuts. I did so a System Restore, but to no avail. Aargh!

I may have the same situation as you. I can't start up the laptop properly after my laptop (11z) shut down suddenly during surfing.
After that I could not turn it on again. The fan and the LED light just run 1 second after I pressed the power button. Then it went silent. Screen stayed black. I couldn't even get to the BIOS. I did had one chance to get into the Dell logo screen and same as you, I pressed F12 to run the diagnostics, all test passed. But when I reboot it again, it wouldn't come up again : (
I called the tech center and the tech asked me to perform the discharge the static charge procedure ( unplug battery and AC power, then press the power button for at least 1 minute. Then put the battery on, turned on the laptop, the system came back again! Some people say that is the procedure for the hardware reset.
The static electricity was build up in the system somehow and it would cause the problem of start up and shut down.
I can understand how do you feel when the laptop goes wrong... wish you luck : )

Before you call, is there an image on an external monitor when the internal screen is black?

Unfortunately, I do not have an external monitor-- just my laptop.

Thanks for sharing a possible solution. I will give it a try. If it works, I will be forever grateful. By unplug battery, do you mean remove it? Hopefully I can figure out how to do that. I will let everyone know. Thanks again.

Dear Colorist,
Color me happy! I followed your directions and, like magic, it booted. So, I tried it again, and it booted-- with no rescue disk in the CD-drive. Thank you so much. It looks like static buildup was the issue. I can't thank you enough.

Yes.
1. Power off the laptop.
2. Remove the battery from the laptop and unplug the AC power. Therefore, there is no power supply to the laptop.
3. Press the power button for at least 1 minute, nothing won't happen but the statics charge (or better to say the residual power) of the system will be drained.
4. Install the battery back to the laptop. If the battery is empty, you can plug into AC power.
5. Power on the laptop.
Wish you luck!

Q: Before you call, is there an image on an external monitor when the internal screen is black?
A: My 11z only has the HDMI output and I haven't got a cable to test it so far...
My dodgy 11z can't display the Dell logo after power on, only the indicated light and the fan are turned on for 1 sec (maybe less than 1 sec) , then nothing happens.
I think my dodgy 11z can't get to the pre-boot environment, so, the monitor (external/internal) won't turn on.

Hi Guys,
I had the same problem as Liz. I did call the Dell Support center even my warranty was already expired. I really need help. Followed the directions from a guy from India by press F12 and he know exactly my problem was. He said if I want to solve that trouble Dell will charge me for $129/yr warranty, but he can make a good offer as $89/one time trouble shooting and have 3 days to extend the warranty as $129/yr.
I followed your directions by removing the battery, press power button for 1 minute and turn laptop in again. Unfortunately, it didn't work. Do you know any other ways to solve this problem. Thank for your time.
