E5510 CPU upgrade
Hi,
got an E5510, want to beef it up, going to get an SSD, but also want to upgrade the CPU. Currently it's an i5 520M (35 W TDP). Is it possible to replace it with an i7 660LM (25 W TDP)? Would love to get the fan quiet. :) But I'm very confused regarding sockets, "PGA" vs "rPGA". What does the E5510 have and what is compatible?
Would this CPU fit in or not (seems it has a BGA to PGA adapter?):
Cheers,
- Malte

Greetings Thunderblade!
Thanks for your question.
I'm not a processor expert. However, I did look into our documentation regarding the Dell supported processors for the Latitude E5510. The Dell supported I7's are below:
I7-620M, 4M
I7-640M, 4M
Using Intel's links below, the 640M looks fairly attractive, compared to the 660LM.

I recommend the I7-640M. I know it will be compatible with your socket. It also seems to have better overall numbers. I cannot promise the 660LM will work with the E5510 as I don't see that Dell ever sold that one with the E5510.
I hope this helps you out.

The first generation i7 CPUs are power-hungry - be sure you have a 130W power adapter (a 90 W or lower adapter likely won't let the CPU run at full speed).

It seems to me that all E5510 came with a 90W power supply. I assumed that the i7 640M with 35W TDP should work, as the i5 520M also has 35W TDP. I will run Prime95 and measure the power consumption before I replace the CPU. I don't have one yet, the prices on eBay are too high at the moment. :)
