E6510, Win7/64: Display Port Doesn't Work

E6510, fresh install of Win7/64. Bios at A13. Display port doesn't work at all, totally dead. I'm using a digital monitor input and a Display Port to DVI converter dongle. Windows does not detect the monitor at all. I THINK I installed all the proper drivers from the Dell support site, but I'm not 100% sure because the documentation is conflicting and some software doesn't show up when you filter on Win7/64. So that could be an issue.

For what it's worth, VGA port on the back of the E6510 works OK as a second monitor. Problem is only Display Port. I have not tried VGA on Display Port because I don't have correct converter dongle.

I also tried Display Port when the unit was running Win7/32 and it didn't work then either.

Thanks JG

Hi there,

I'm very sorry to hear that you're having issues with your Latitude E6510 but please be assured that I'll try my best to resolve this for you.

First thing to check would be the DisplayPort itself to see if there is any sign of physical damage to the port. If you see any pins that look bent or damaged, this could be the cause of the problem.

What may be the cause of the problem is the dongle you have. If you're able to substitute this with another DisplayPort to DVI dongle or ideally, remove the dongle altogether and connect a monitor that has a DisplayPort port directly, this will be able to prove if the issue is with the dongle itself.

You mention that you're not sure if you have installed the drivers correctly. If you can attach a .jpg of the Device Manager output, I'll be able to determine if this is part of the cause of the problem.

I hope to hear from you soon and thanks again for your time.

Hi John, your suggestions are reasonable.  Physically the DP looks fine.  What is the easiest way in Device Manager to get a complete output listing? Do I just have to expand all the entires and then screenshot it, or is there a better way? I totally agree with you also that it would be best to do a direct test to a display port monitor but I don't have one. I'll see if I can borrow one.

Thanks

Hi there,

Sorry for the delay in getting back in touch as I was off on annual leave yesterday.

Easiest way to get a complete output listing is as you say just to expand all entries and then take a screenshot. It would be a massive help as it may give us an idea as to what is causing the problem.

If you could borrow a monitor with a DisplayPort connection, that would be excellent. Dongles are the most likely point of failure when it comes display issues like this so it's the first thing we should rule out, if we can.

Hope to hear from you soon!

OK I have the screenshots. What's the best way to get them to you?

Thanks

Hi there,

I've sent you a friend request with my e-mail address, if you can send the screenshots in an e-mail to me, it would be a great help. Let me know if you have any problems.
