Erratic mouse movement and freezing

My mouse experiences uncontrollable movement from time to time, seemingly more when I am connected to the internet, although that may just be coincidence because I usually am.  The mouse is just a touchpad one on a laptop.  It repeatedly opens up my start menu and either moves around icons on there, or opens programs.
It also sometimes closes whatever windows I have open.  It has happened regardless of what wireless or cable connection I am using.  Sometimes I can stop this happening by holding the right click button for several seconds.  Occasionally after doing this I will be unable to use the up and down arrows to scroll in Internet Explorer.  I can still move up and down such things as my favorites, but not the window itself.
After this erratic movement happens four to six times in one sitting, the mouse will freeze, either at the bottom left corner of the screen on the Start menu, or in the very middle.  On some of these occasions, my computer makes a loud beeping noise if I try to move the mouse.  It sometimes takes as many as 5 restarts for it to unfreeze, though usually shutting it down and waiting several minutes before turning it on again will work.
I have done multiple virus scans and spyware scans with different products, and nothing has turned up.  I can't run the F12 scan because I don't have that program, so I don't know if that would turn anything up.  Hope I haven't overwhelmed you with information, but I suppose in this case more is better.

Thanks,
K

Have you run Dell Diagnostics?

I can't run it because I don't have the program.  I got a new hard drive a few months ago and did not have the CD to install it.

I had a similar problem and traced it to a USB conflict. I had a powered USB2 hub connected to my laptop and found that by adding and removing the items connected to it one at a time, I found the cause of the problem. I found the offending item and moved it to a USB port on the laptop itself. I started by disconnecting the hub and then put the hub alone back and then one USB item at a time to find the one causing the problem. Now I know which ones can go on the hub and which ones have to go directly to the laptop as I found a few items causing the problem.

Worth a go, it worked for me. All is well know.
